Whilst we are on the subject of disc bakes........? |
I'm looking to get a new HT mountain bike for around 拢300. Is it worth getting one with Mech. disc brakes (are they any good) or would my money be better spent on other areas/specs. ? I would rather spend the money to get better shifters, derailleurs, or a suspension fork, than mech disc brakes. The brakes would be cheaper to add later than running shifter/derailleur/fork upgrades. Look for a bike that already has the disc mount tabs on the frame and fork. Some bikes will even have disc brake ready hubs in the wheels but use the v-brake. If you can find one like this, all you'd need is the rotor, caliper, and cables (which you can find as kits usually). I think Tektro offers a kit like this for about $60-$70 USD per brake. The Avid or Hayes mech disc will run more. Installling disc brakes on my mountain bike was the best thing I have done with any bike. You don't need and expensive derailleur unless you are planing to race. Then you would want disc brakes for sure anyway. They will put you over the handle bars in a heartbeat though. Only drink from your bottle with your left hand when riding. Disk brakes work good, until they do not. What I mean is that disk brakes are complicated to adjust and repair. Unless you are doing some heavy duty down hill I would keep the cantilever brake system, they work very well, simple to adjust and maintain. For this reasons I would rather spend my money in other areas; shifters, derailleurs, etc. every time i do steep downhills near a overpass, i touch my disc brakes and my hand has a sting.... yes it a good purchase, especially if your heavy, if you want comp disc brakes get hydrulic I have them and they are definitely worth it. |
