What are the best pedals to get? |
I am getting into mountain bike racing and I am wondering what pedals would be best for this application I was considering the egg beater style. This is complex! On balance I'd go for egg-beaters too, but ..... If you're doing tricky or technical stuff you'll need to put your feet down a lot. Therefore you'll need pedals that release fast and reliably and are easy to relocate instantly on the fly. So don't go for Shimano SPDs! Some people reckon you should stick with platform pedals for this very reason, however, that means you lose power when pedalling uphill or when standing - in both cases clip-in systems mean you get power from pulling as well as pushing. All clip-ins can be a pain on slow, technically difficult terrain, simply because you can't get your foot to the ground fast enough. If you do much of this consider a pedal with a clip-in on one side and a platform on the other. A clever solution, but a compromise. If you need to walk much in your bike shoes your first priority is to ensure the cleat does not protrude below the sole of the shoe. Seems obvious - but many makes have a real problem with this and you'll have hassle walking on the road, or on the parquet floor of your local pub (beware the landlord). It also means you may be buying pedals, cleats and shoes as a package. Consider this seriously, not all shoes are the same underneath! Take care - eggbeaters and Frog both have a problem with this. If you're mudplugging a lot you need a system that clears the crap well - the egg-beaters and Frogs are good for this. Don't forget that clip-ins need to have a lot of lateral float without letting go or you'll be putting your knee joints under serious strain. Not good in the long-term. Lots of play sometimes means the cleats don't hang on well. The Frogs however, are brilliant in this respect. There is one other factor - looks. I like the tiny size and simple elegance of the Frogs, but eggbeaters make people look twice! So its platform for quickest release and relocation (i.e. no clip-in) but consider a half-clip, half- platform pedal too. Its eggbeaters or frogs for mud-clearance, but check you can walk on them. Its Frogs for lateral float. Shimano SPDs are too much money for too little of everything. All the others (like Look and Time) are too expensive, or for the road only. Egg beater is only good for beating your eggs.Get a girlfriend instead of beating your eggs. The best pedals to get are the ones that's attached to a Suzuki RM250 or a Honda CR125. You can really kick up the dirt and leave all mountain bikers eating your dust. Road - Look Keos Mountain - Egg Beaters Shimano SPD-SL; light, good degree of float, easy to use (as long as you have a shoe with a 3-bolt system) Bones----SPD pedals are excellent for the adrenalized Mt. biker----ask for a catalog from COLORADO CYCLIST ( www.coloradocyclist.com ) or JENSON USA ( www.jensonusa.com ) for COOL PEDALS. Many to choose from bro! weyless b-67 platform pedals. altho you do lose a lot of power going up, you learn to compensate by working harder on the push.you will feel slower at first, but platforms will give you the most confidence on downhills. |
