Do you need a license to drive a scooter?

Like a Vespa or a motorized scooter? I live in America and plan on getting one for around the city.

it varies by city, but most do not requrie more than a regular driver's license if you get the smaller engine model (top speed of 30 something miles?. You also don't need to register that one in most cities. If you get the bigger engine one (top speed exceeding 60 mph) then you have to register it as a motorcycle and also have a motorcycle license. At least that's how its done in Boston.

I believe they just passed a law on this that you do need a license.

in some states yes, in others no. It gets more confusing: in some states if it is less than a certian CC's (engine size) no, if it is larger, yes. Contact the department of motor vehicle or get a motorcycle handbook for your state to find out for sure.

Well technically they are not cars, ie not street legal. I would assume a cop could pull you over for driving it on the street. Ive never seen them do it before. But I dont know how you could get a license for something that cant legally drive on roads.

Oh I just looked up Vespa they do have some street legal models, in that case I would have to assume you would need a motorcycles license.

you have to take a written test and be at least 14 here
and they issue you a real picture driver license and while you are at it you might want to get that Jet ski/vessel endorsement as well,that is if you plan on churnning up some water this summer,Kimosabe.
