With now 141 USD/barrel and rising. Do you think the oil industry will eventually make motor vehicles obsolete

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080627/ap_o...

Instead of stepping ahead in technology. Some people are beginning to step back - horses, bikes, scooters, and public transportation. I won't mind riding a horse to work everyday...so long as the workplace provides food, water, and shelter for the horse. That would be fun!

You know work places never provided food, water or shelter for horses, even back before cars. If you rode a horse you paid a stable to keep your horse near work, if you rode a horse to work. But people rich enough to ride a horse to work didn't have to go to work. They let the lower classes do all the work while they hunted or managed their business from their big homes or rode in horse drawn carriages around the city with a driver and footman to care for the horses while waiting for the boss to need a ride, while the poor people just lived in hovels within walking distance of the sweatshops they worked at.

You have no idea how good we have it today and how bad it would be to go back to the old ways. No idea at all. If you really want an old fashion lifestyle in a modern world, there are people who do that. The Amish. If that life style is your cup of tea, give it a try. Step 1, stop using your computer.

No it will not. It is still the cheapest, most reliable fuel source available to the public in mass today.

That $141/barrel of oil not only fuels our cars but most of our houses and businesses energy needs as well.

We do not have enough land to grow our way out of oil. We do not have enough land to solar power our way out of oil use. Even the best Hybrid cars can't get rid of the gas engine.

The best solution for today's technology is to either decrease demand or increase supply. Since the demand has spiked because of China and India, demand is out of our control. But, we are sitting on our own supply that we are ignoring.

Drill Now.

Do I think the oil industry will eventually make motor vehicles obsolete?

NO, I think the average household budget not being able to keep up with inflation/gas prices will make motor vehicles obsolete. We need more reliable and accesible public transportation.

As for horses, they eat a lot. Unless you have a large pasture it will take fossil fuels to deliver several tons of hay per year to you.

Get a bicycle.

Oil is expensive, and some people are betting that we've hit peak oil - meaning oil will be harder to find and drill now then ever. This means 141/barrel might be cheap compared to what we'll see in the future.

One major car company Mercedes-Benz has pledged to remove gasoline burning cars from their lineup by 2015. That's a large worldwide car company making a very big claim. I think it's indicative of the way the industry will move in the future.

Not in our lifetime.....
Our retarded congress is doing everything they can to prevent oil companies and thus we the people from securing lower prices at the pump.
If they get the heck out of the way we would be much less dependent on the mob at OPEC and have lower prices as a result.
Private enterprise will solve the al;ternative fuel problem- not any government. In the mean time we need affordable gas. There is plenty of untapped coal and oil here in the US.
BTW,AGW is a trojan horse for global socialism.

They will eventually make oil driven motor vehicles obsolete.

We will just move on to newer technologies.

Will you clean up the streets behind everyone's horses?

No but it could put us in a deep depression.

Could b
