49cc motor scooter...governors, speed restrictors?

i am currently looking into buying a 49cc motor scooter...i am wanting to get a 49cc because my states laws dont require a small motorcycle license to drive one...but i was wondering is there anyway i could get more speed out of it...is there a governor? should i remove it?...what other simple mods could i do to pick up an additional 10-15mph? are mods very effective? if you have a website to where i could buy a good speed kit or mod kit let me know?
please help...thank you.

it is a retro 49cc

Dear Scooter4,

I've been doing this for a few years and I must say yours is not the first question to come to me on this subject. So, I'll try to help you out.

The 49cc limit is both a State & Federal mandated restriction as is the MPH question (35 mph by law). However I have seen scooters classified as "mopeds which do 45 mph. How long this keeps up depends on your driving habits. If you max the bike out at 45 mph you will certainly wear the machine out. Also, the "moped" specification will keep you off most "I" type roads. The bike your looking at has small wheels which could be a safety factor if your driving hell bent to where ever. Remember, increased speed always factors in safety parameters. So think safety first.

I would suggest you try www.valleyscooters.com. They are a CT company and they feature bikes with bigger tires. The frames appear to be heaveir, thus a stronger bike.

Now if the question involves using your bike to commute, try on owning something larger. Good offerings are available in the 250cc range. The bonus is a stronger bike and surely, a safer one to ride. Yes, you will have take the motorcycle test and get your license endorsed, but in the end, it may be the safer alternative for you.

In summary, You cannot turn a moped into a Harley. You may boost the motor, but after 49 cc's, your into the license endorsement thing. So please play it safe regardless of your decision.

Sincerely,

Bill Andrews
Mystic, CT

There are several things you can do. Variator, clutch, roller weights, belt, carb and exhaust. Check out www.scootdawg.com lots of good info on the best choices. Might even find a review of the scooter.
