Can any President lower the cost of Fuel, is it within the power of the office to demand the oil producers?

refiners, or owners of the stations lower the price of fuel for the American Consumer? If as a lot of people are claming it is a matter of supply and demand why do the American People continue to drive when they could easily cut down on demand by using other means of transportation, Bicycles, motor scooters, god forbid walking, and carpooling, what about it people what are you doing to lessen demand?

A Presidents policies if backed by congress can have an effect on oil prices but a President can't demand the oil producers? refiners, or owners of the stations lower the price of fuel for the American Consumer

There are a number of steps that government can take to help control prices but the will is lacking and the government representatives have to think a couple of steps ahead of the oil companies and the speculators and the foreign oil suppliers.

Americans can conserve but many Americans have few options because of the lack of public transportation and their geographical situations. It is easy to say that Americans can cut down on consumption but many have long commutes to work and no alternative means to get to school or to the supermarket.

It has also become obvious that supply and demand are not driving the oil prices. The focus has now shifted to speculation.

he could return to the former regulations we had on trading oil futures, which is what is currently driving up the price of oil.

he could stop buying for the Strategic Petroleum reserve, which is 97% full.

he could reinstate the cap on profits for oil companies, which was created in the 70's to prevent price gouging.

i completely agree that we should all be riding our bikes, carpooling, taking public transit, and just generally doing what we can ourselves... because as in every era of conservative government, all of the help from those in power is going to those who don't need it.

Yes. I have been asking why Iraq which we control has not been pumping much more gas and breaking the OPEC monopoly. I think GWB with the approval of the Democrats did some secret diplomatic deal for the war in Iraq with the Saudis, because the deafening silence on the matter is unbelievable.

GWB and the GOP keep prattling on about ANWR and the offshore oil and they are right, but that oil is years away.

Also GWB could suspend the EPA regulations that restrict certain types of oil as feedstock for refineries.

It has got to the point where the best anyone can do is invade Venezuela, because many of his countrymen hate Chavez and with proper effort we could pump more gas and the Columbians, etc. hate him. Remember both LBJ and RWR invaded places in Latin America and immediately withdrew with success. However, after the war without end in Iraq, I do not think that it would sell.

So far as the speculators are concerned, an inquiry into Soros is overdue and so is an inquiry into whether the Iranians are manipulating futures prices to get the peace candidate elected for the presidency.

I ask this question too, why are you wanting your government or companies to change their ways if you yourself are not willing to change? It doesn't make any sense, we have to prove capable of lowering our consumption before they will do anything about the supply.

As for the President, I dont think they can do too much, but then again our sitting President is the one who stated he would be able to jawbone the OPEC leaders to open the spigot....

No the president does not have the power to lower the cost of fuel , and a lot of people are trying to find other means of transportation. the auto industry in experimenting with the fuel cell car that would virtually eliminate the need for gas. check their web sites.

its easier said than done..like me, i work pretty far form my home. takes me about 30 min. to get to work. i dont at all understand how gas can go up 10 cents higher in one day. its crazy and irritating, but most families today, rely on their vehicles for eveything, and thats hard to cut out of you life.

and i also, think that we shoudl drill of our own coasts and our own lands. but we cant because of the peta freaks and tree huggers. which, i love wild life, and nature and am all for being safe while drilling. but hello, this is america, theyll do it the right way and the animals will be fine. this aint dirty china. if they did drill, it would be done right, or not done at all, cause this is the good ole USA:)

Welcome to the never ending cycle of America. We want lower fuel prices, but won't do anything about it.

I would really be interested in knowing how the President controls the fuel prices. I just don't see how he is responsible.

The only way would be to drill in the USA, which the Dems refuse to do, and the Environmentalists who don't give a crap about other countries drilling on their land as long as its not ours! Now Al Gores Eth Addiction is making children STARVE to death in other countries!

only by drilling for oil or building nuclear power plants, etc. and

by RAISING THE VALUE OF THE DOLLAR.

If we keep devaluing the dollar by having low interest rates and high deficits, the price of oil will head to $300/barrel

Not in a free market system. Capitalism does not lend itself to that.
