Can a 50cc scooter be "winterized"?

I would like to purchase a 50cc motor scooter, but would like to use it year round and am unsure it will be a wise investment if it will be overly dangerous in chicago winter conditions. Has anyone had any sucess with wet winter condition scooter use? Should I purchase special tires or use some sort of antifreeze chemical?

Well, the things you have to watch for are the combustion temperatures and the road status.

You need to switch to a lighter oil for the winter, but nothing short of a third wheel is going to keep you from sliding out from on top your bike if you hit some black ice. With a 50cc motorcycle you might be able to stabilize enough by sticking your legs out but a scooter is definitely not made to do that by the way you sit in it.

So, even if you had special tires you'd still have the danger of ice spots - especially black ice. If you aren't worried about that, you might be able to do it, but most people don't like operating 2 wheelers in wet conditions because they become much more unsafe then.

I would not want to ride a scooter in wet slippery conditions. Stay in your car its warmer

You haven't lived through a Chicago winter yet, have you?

You are in for an experience if you have never ridden in winter conditions. I live in the south and have times when I won't take my bike out (and I am a pretty hardcore rider). You will want to put that thing up in the winter and take the bus or drive a car, you will find yourself pretty miserable riding in the harsh northern winters.
