Okay I'm 16 years old. I don't have a permit or drivers liscenece yet. I've been seeing alot of people that have scooters aroudn town (I'm in colorado) and I was wondering what the laws were for those I don't need anything really fast. Just something to get me from my house to work. (my work is about 1 mile or so away and theres a sidewalk.) to my boyfriends house (theres a sidewall all the way except on the cross walk, and then, on one small 2lane road right before his house.) I'm wondering if I need a liscence for it and if so how long does it take, and 2nd can I just drive it on the sidewalks? I was thinking about something like either this. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...
or
vespa motor scooters?
I dont know anything about these I just like the way it looks. It's not liek the cheap $199 you get at Walmart that only one person can fit on, with or without a seat. You cannot ride ANY scooters on the sidewalk!
Don`t buy a Chinese scooter!! You will be sorry if you did. Call Sportique scooters in Denver!
The cool ones that go more than 30 mph You DO need a license AND a motorcycle endorsement, unless you find one that is not more than 50ccs and DOES NOT EXCEED 30mph, then you just need a regular Drivers license! Check with your local license bureau. In Texas you could get a motorcycle license for a bike under 100 cc at age 16. That would cover most scooters. You will take a written test and after you pass that you will be followed while you take a drivers test. The drivers test involves riding through cones and accelerating to a specific speed and quickly braking the bike. Next you will drive a specific pattern through a neighborhood with the officer following you. Here in Texas you can also get a learners permit that will let you practice as long as a motorcycle license holder is within sight of you at all times. Please don't consider riding the scooter on the side walk or with out a license. A motor scooter is a street vehicle and requires that it be operated on the street just like a car. Good luck - Gary |
