Impotation of 2 stroke engines?

I heard that the epa has new rules and regulations over the importation of 2 stroke engines in scooters. If the engine is small, like 49cc, would regulations govern it? What about 2 stroke chainsaws, blowers, etc. If engine is same size, would it fall under use of motor? A scooter motor will be used for other things than a chainsaw, for example.
I tried to read epa.gov page, but got lost in the verbage. Any of you out there in Answers land imported/exported anything like this and know from experience?

importation, I can't spell. ha

Importing to USA. Guess I forgot to add that.

I ride a 50cc 2-stroke TGB, which is brand new, and the website says that all of their 2-stroke scootes are DOT and EPA licensed... I think it's still up to the state to accept or refuse such a scooter, but without the DOT/EPA certification, they can't accept it...

Two years or so ago, the EPA made it so that even 50cc and below scooters were subject to the same rules as everyone else... what that means is that to be imported into the USA, it has to pass the same environmental tests as everyone else... so if you can get a 2-stroke here, it'll be pretty clean. Therefore, there are 2-strokes available legally in the USA, but they're few and far between due to the new regulations.

So--- as always... it's down to your state or locality... Check with them.

It mostly depends on the state you live in. I live in Missouri and I've heard different things about 2 strokes and the amount of cc's. I'd call you're local licensing bureau and ask them.

it depends on govt. to govt. in each country. 2 stroke engines cause much pollution than 4 stroke so there are different policies for the use of 2 stroke engines. generally engine size smaller than 50 cc dont fall under and restriction (i am talking about India) so it entirely depends on govt. policies. but any other engine of same size shouldn't be count under scooter engines category.

Not personally, but I was watching the discovery channel yesterday about the invention and history of motorcycles. In the latter part of the show, they were talking about super cross and motor cross racing, and how 2 cycle engines are slowly fading away, because of the engines having to mix oil and gas in order to burn properly, and hence cause much more exhaust fumes entering into the atmosphere. They are no longer producing a street legal 2 cycle engine, and will shortly not allow 2 cycle engines in those races. Apparently there are 4 stroke engines evolving now that are fast, light weight and capable of replacing the 2 cycle counterparts. Eventually, as with everything else, chainsaws, lawn mowers and all other two cycle engines will be viewed in a museum somewhere, but you won't be able to use one in public. Don't waste your money...just get a 4 stroke engine and be happy you did.
