Giving my parents a mobility scooter with conditions...?

I dont have much of a relationship with my parents, especially my mother. This comes from their neglect as grandparents towards my son, whom I love more than anything. Recently my father has become ill and is now unable to walk great distances. I offered to buy him a scooter (mobility buggy) and he did not want one initially. Now he has agreed and it arrives tomorrow. I have a feeling that my mother wants to use it more than he does, which I suppose had to happen.

Anyway, I know from experience that my parents are liable to use this buggy then decide they do not want or need it. In the past they have sold or given away things like this that I have helped them out with once they tired of them.

In this instance (as the buggy is expensive) I do not want my parents to sell it or give it away. Hence, I am going to tell them that it is on loan to them from me until they decide they do not want it anymore. Is this wrong?

What is it about my son they have not accepted? I am not sure. There's so so many things they could choose as a reason: My wife is Angolo Indian and a catholic. My son was born on the same day as my late elder brother (which I take as a great message of goodwill from him) and maybe that freaks them out. I refuse to befriend my sisters abusive lowlife (Springer Show) husband. I refuse to accept my sister's abusive behaviour (theivery, drunkenness and general horridness)., I refuse to accept that my surviving brother is mentally handicapped, as my mother insists (I know he is just a 40 plus year old mooching bum pretending toi be an idiot to gain peoples sympathy).

Any one of those issues has caused my family to be estranged from me, but as to the ignoring of my son I think my wife is right. She thinks theat my parents just don't know how to behave and don't (for whatever reason) have any loving feelings towards me or my son.

Yes, I've had counselling over this :)

I think you are doing the right thing. You are a good son, who, despite such awful parents, is still able to help them.

Just safeguard yourself financially and emotionally. I know the kind of parents who think more of themselves than their children or grandchildren. You have a big heart, so please don't let them hurt you with their odd behaviour.

xx

wouldn't it be better to hire one? or lease one?

nope its good

A pound to a penny they'll STILL sell it if they feel like it. I've got a relation like that too ;0(

DB has the right idea - rent it.

Nothing wrong with it at all.

Just make sure they know if they ever decide they do not want it it comes back to you and you alone.

What is it with your child that they have not accepted?

Just curious.

If I were in your shoes I don't know if I would resort to renting one or leasing one, you end up paying more in the end if you do. That is how they make money off of renting or leasing. Just like cars.

I do not think it is wrong to buy them something then ask that they return it when they are finished with it. Maybe they sell things though becuase they need the money for other things that they need. It doesn't make it right, but maybe that is why. If it is loaned to them they should make sure you have an option of getting it back.

You are doing the right thing yes tell them if they don't want it that you will have it back, you could always say that you told someone else they could have it if your parents don't want it, it's good and kind of you to help them out from what you say, they are very lucky to have you.

sounds like a good idea to me.
