Can you change a 4mph mobility scooter to 6mph or 8mph?

Mobility scooters are divided into classes.ie.Class 1..Class 2 and Class 3. Each class is designed for specific use .The pavement type scooters are the 4.5 m.p.h. models as this is the permitted speed for pavement models. The faster models for road use have to have traffic indicators and suitable diameter wheels for kerb access etc; If your scooter is not classed for road use you would be risking injury or worse .Battery size and amp/hour capacity is that which regulates range and speed.If you mess with this you could invalidate your warranty or at worst risk injury.Only class 3 scooters are in the class able to use speeds of 6-8 mph and you also need lights and traffic indicators to keep within the law..Hope this helps !! To those who gave certain answers to this question.I am a disabled ex biker and in the past owned Harley's and Beemers and not all of use cause aggro with our scooters .Give us a break man...you might need one of these scooters one day and then you'll know just how good they are. !!!!

just get a second battery pack and wire it in series... there's a good chance it'll go 2x as fast (or at least 1.41x - if so, get three more packs instead). won't extend the range much though, and it'll be heavier, and you might burn out the motor.

a more amusing project would be to whip out the electrics and weld in a 50cc quad bike motor & transmission :-D

DC motors, right? Well, you could ramp up the volts; they would spin faster, then burn out. That will mean a bit of jiggery pokery with the drive electronics, more than likely replacing it. You will get increased friction as well, so doubling the power won't get you double the speed. To reduce the time to burnout you should lighten the load (take bits off the scooter, like cowlings or whatever) and pump up the tyres nice and hard.

I don't think there's a solution to this involving gearboxes.

The only way to do this without changing the electrical input is to change the drive gearing- a gear of 64 teeth from the motor shaft coupling with one of 256 on the prop or axle-shaft (depending how it's designed) will result in the axle turning four times for every 1 of the motor. If it's belt driven then its to do with the sizes of the pullies. In practice because the motor turns quickly it'll go through a reducing chain of several gears or if it's a very expensive one it might be a hydraulic motor that does the final drive.
Putting a larger gear in the chain or a smaller gear on the motor shaft will make the axle turn faster but it'll reduce the amount of torque it develops. This means that the acceleration will be slower, it'll be more difficult to get up inclines and if you overdo it it might not develop enough to overcome its inertia in the first place.
