Too civilized to survive. Have western nations become too dependent on technology?

I was looking at a website the other day and I saw these two men in Africa pushing these homemade wooden scooters(for want of a better word) loaded with grain sacks. During the Soviet- Afghan war in the 80's Russian soldiers encountered Afghan freedomfighters using AK-47's that had been made with hand tools, (they weren't rifled but they fired 762x39's just like the Soviet AK's.
The civilized world has become so dependant upon technology and social programs that they could be likened to park bears in that they wouldn't be able to survive with out someone throwing them a sandwich.
I know people that don't know where the spare tire on their car is. They can't check the oil. If some catastrophe strikes they wonder what the government is going to do about it. It starts when they are kids and the batteries go dead on their gameboy. They can't think of anything to do.
I am not trying to anger anyone with this. I am wondering if anyone one else has a theory on this?

I know I can't. I went camping last month and was told to bring the necessities. I brought my laptop, ipod, and my cell phone. And those are bare necessities to me. I really need to release this strangle hold, its just hard.

Mankind has always been dependent on technology. Even the cave man had to use unnatural items to live, had to skin animals for warmth. Technology has improved, our way of life has improved, but if everything stopped working, we would become more violent of a race, but humans are survivors.

You seem to have an obsession with living in the woods in a login cabin or something. If you don't like technology Paul Bunyon, get off the computer.

humans are evolving constantly.We will live with our gadgets and adapt to them.For better or worse.
We all know what happened to the russians in Afghanistan.
That was not because of nonrifeled AK47's .It was the mounting bodybags the russians couldn't stomach.

Technology has enabled more people to live more comfortable lives and enabled people to have more free time for other pursuits in life. If not for technology, we would have to go hunting everyday for meat, or work all day in the fields to ensure we have enough to eat, especially during the winter months. There would be very little free time left for other pursuits, such as the Arts, Inventing, etc.
Of course, our dependencies on technology makes us vulnerable to catastrophies, should a big one happen. Once a major catastrophy happens, millions will die due to starvation, lack of water, etc., while those surviving are the people that are used to eating whatever they can find. Cannibalism can also be an outcome in such a situation.
In some ways, we're living on a glass house.
