Before BMX's came out, what was the best bike to have as a kid?


I reckon the original Raliegh Chopper as the Grifter was too heavy.

A Chopper every time. The ultimate being the MK1, 5 speed with adjustable handlebars, the urban ledgend that it was banned and replaced by the 3 speed MK2 only added to its street cred.

The Chopper was a big heavy piece of crap. Much heavier than the Grifter. I know. I delivered papers on one for years. Got a Grifter and it was like heaven.
Got to be a Raleigh Grifter! They were great and I'm sure this is what the BMX was modelled on.
Any make racing bike with a razor saddle
This is going back a bit, but when I was a kid, we called them "English Racers." They were sleeker than the usual Schwinn and a lot faster. Plus, they had gears and better brakes.

My first was a green Hermes. I loved that bike.
I totally agree with you it was the chopper,i remember when i used to ride off from my younger brother,and he used to chase after me and grab hold of the metal bar that was on the back of the seat.
