How do I take a pedal arm off my push bike? |
I need to swap the pedal arm on my push bike as the treads have been sheared where i put the pedal in (Kids!) I have so far hit it with varying size hammers but it doesnt appear to be shifting. I have taken the bolt out already before any mentions that! Anyone know anything on this one? it sounds like you have a 3 piece crank. you need a special tool called a crank puller. its sold at bike shops and costs about $15. one part of the tool screws into the threads on the crank where you took the bolt off. ten the handle screws into that, and when you turn the handle in, a piece pushes against the spindle and pulls the crank arm off. "Square type" bottom brackets are held on very tight, and you cant just whack them off with a hammer, you need more torque than that. after threading the handle part in a fair ways, you can pull the arm off easily. once you get a new crank arm, grease up the spindle a small amount (where the arm came off) and then slide the new arm on. dont forget to tighten the bolt down. it should be cranked fairly tight so the arm doesnt wiggle loose. If you've successfully remove the cotter pin then and still having problems then a can of WD40 is your best friend. Gloosh it all over the end of the pedal arm on the crank, leave it for 10-15 mins to penetrate and then wallop the pedal with a 3lb club hammer. Most pedal arms are held in place by a lock bolt that forces the pedal on to a taper shaft. As a result the pedal can be very tight on the shaft, if it does not move with a hammer you may need to apply some localised heat on the pedal to remove it. taken the bolt out? youneed to unscrew the cap at the other end of the arm from the pedal. behind it will be a nut attached to the end of the axle. undo that nut (you need a special tool normally). once the nut is off (and this might be the stage you are already at)it is a case of force. however, hitting the arm with a hammer (by the pedal) is likely to force the other end in. hit it/move it both ways (including back towards the bike) so that it loosens. |
