At what age can kids start working out?

My girlfriend and I are having a discussion about what age kids can start working out. She thinks like high school. I say around 6 years old you can bring them into the gym. Ride the bike and a little weight lift. But in the back of my head I think, once the kind starts crawling like crazy, we can stick him on a treadmill. Supervised of course. ;-)

kids can lift at any age,, just not to heavy in the younger years so not to stunt or affect their bone growth,, just what ever is comfy,, but lifting in the younger years, under 13 won't do much because their muscles are growing everyday so the added use doesn't do much,, at around 13 or 14 is when the muscles start accepting added stimuli and are able to take on the extra use for growth,, i would advise against pushing younger kids into weights until their body is ready ,, just keep them physically active until they are in the early teens as to keep the body fat down and their meatbolism high,, that is one problem with kids now a days,, to much time in front of the tv playing games,, leads to obesity
Iread that you shouldn't go through strenuous exercise til 15/16
I don't know what area you are in but in my town children have to be 15 to go to my gym even if they are supervised. However they are never to young to start having an active and healthy lifestyle. My 15 yr. old daughter started working out with me at home when she was a toddler. I just found fun ways that we could do it together.
You shoudln't take them to a gym until they are at least in their early teens.
Well, kids should be active and exercising regardless of their age. However, when it comes to weight lifting it really doesn't help until they reach puberty. So, somewhere between 12-14 is when kids should begin to do that sort of thing. Otherwise they'll just be using up energy that could be put into helping them grow.
I defnitely think it depends on their age level and their level of physical ability. I would think they should stay away from heavy exercising such as bench presses and any kind of weight lifting till about high school age. But treadmills, bikes and stationary mobility equipment should be fine as long as young children are supervised and they know what they are doing.
I think Little Hercules parents' started him at about 1 1/2 or 2 years old, but they were crazy. If the kid likes to work out, as long as you supervise him or her whenever you think the kids ready should be okay.
