Should I walk or ride a bike?

I'm 21 F, 5 foot and weigh 150. Wanted to start bike riding again (haven't since I was a kid) but after 10 minutes this morning my thighs were sore so I stopped. I quit smoking but only two weeks ago. Anyway, I'm worried that if I keep tryin to ride, I'm just going to end up working my thighs too much and they'll become bulky when all I wanna do is lop the fat off. Am I right in thinking that?

I was thinking of walking instead, but biking is fun and walking is boring. But I don't see any other way since I'm badly out of shape and need to start at the beginner's level. Anyone got suggestions for making walking funner? I don't have an ipod and can't afford one. I was also wondering approx how long it would take for me to be fit enough to ride a bike (and do it aerobically) for 40 min, if I walk for 40 min, five days a week. Or is it possible I can still get a good cardio workout from biking by just pedaling through the burn, and possibly without simultaneously bulking up my thighs?

Keep biking ... its good that you are feeling the burn .... You burn the real calories when you start feeling the burn! Source(s): experience
Anytime you start a new activity it can cause some muscle soreness. After a couple of weeks it won't do that anymore. Bicycling doesn't usually build your muscles up too much, so I would keep it up. You could alternate between bicycling and walking, depending on what you feel like doing.
Bulking up muscles usually occurs when pushing very heavy weights a limited number of times (aka "training to failure").

Since bicycle riders are generally pushing relatively light weight many times, it can be done in an aerobic manner, and generally does not cause "bulking up".

Walking and riding use some different muscles, so doing both would be best for all around exercise, IMO.
I have a bad bodily balance and therefore I was never able to ride a bike, except for a tricycle (yeah, like 20 years ago). I have no other choice, but walking around.

However, even if I had a choice between a bicycle and walking, I would still choose walking. Why? Because of safety. Once I start my rounds in the morning (about 4 miles total) I know that I will come back home no matter how tired I will be. That is because my legs have nothing to do with technology.

With a bike it could be a whole different story. If, say, I ride a bike on the side of the road (no sidewalks) and a head-on collision with a car is about to take place. I have to make a sharp turn off of the road. I would be extremely lucky if nothing bad happens to me. In most cases the possibilities are as follows: injuries; hospital; funeral... No, thank you. I would like to live another 50 years or so.

Same situation: no sidewalks and the head-on collision with a car is about to take place and I WALK off of the road nicely and carefully. The car passes me and I resume my walking.

I say yes to the walking and I say no to the bike rides. Yet I don't want to scare anybody. If they like the bikes, then they like the bikes, but still the bike rides aren't safer than walking.
