Kids not eating much, losing a little weight, is this normal? |
My kids are not eating much. I include them in meal planning and preparation, but they would rather just be outside running, playing or riding bikes. We just try to offer healthy stuff they like and have family meal times, but they don't want to eat much. We don't force them to eat and they are losing a little (less than 4 pounds) weight. Is this normal? im certain its their age. kids change their minds everyday about what they like and dislike.taste. texutres.... so much to choose from. not to mention... they find themselves going through so many different changes! weather they are an active tiny two year old to a pre- teen. children who tend to be active surely can fluxuate in pounds. i just wouldn't allow them to junk foods all day or completely rule the dinner chart.its great that you include them @ this point. its so positive that its a family issue. families that eat together @ the table for meals, have shown to have the greatest positive effect in school as well. just a little bit of home bonding makes such a large impact. with 1/3 of the population being heavy weights, you should be happy that they aren't over weight. just as well, the body immage to be so skinny these days is a harmful factor as well. as long as you stress to them that both healthy eatting and physical activity are key to a great appearance... i think you are doing fantastic! Depends on how old they are. Most likely it is very normal. If they truly are not eating and you are really concerned, maybe you are trying to be TOO healthy? Are you making anything they like or are you making all kinds of healthy stuff that grownups have to choke down? I really think that you have to balance health with yum when you are dealing with young children. Any children for that matter. With me, I cook at least one thing that everyone likes each meal. But, my kids are pretty healthy eaters anyway. THere are also very sneaky ways to make your kids eat healthy. Blend up a variety of veggies (broccoli, fresh spinach leaves, carrots, etc...anything your kids would vomit on) and put it all in a blender with a jar of their favorite spaghetti sauce and make a pizza, spaghetti, a lasagne or whatever with it. They will eat it and it won't taste any different to them once they load on the parmesan. See? Do tricky stuff like that. Make bananna bread with a couple of new fruits blended instead of oil. Make carrot cake, zucchini bread, yada yada. Hope I helped a little. But I promise you they will eat. |
