What's a good way to teach a child to ride a bike? |
I am a nanny and am working with a set of parents who really think it's time their daughter ride her bike without training wheels. She's definitely physically ready and has good balance, etc., but doesn't really seem confident in herself and won't concentrate. If we stop taking her out she gets upset because then she can't get her brand new purple bike, but if we do take her out, she purposely wobbles the bike. We've tried talking to her and we hold onto the back of the seat while she rides. Are there any other tips you could offer? Nothing mean and nasty about pushing the kid--the parents have decided on this approach with the child (and the mom's a child psychologist so she knows what she's doing), I just need to take her outside every day and "practice" until she gets it... Any suggestions? We spent a great deal of time trying to teach our son to ride his bike. Riding on grass helped quite a lot, as did spending a lot of time running along holding the seat while he got used to balancing and pedaling and steering at the same time. We also found practicing for short periods often helped keep everyone from getting too frustrated. The reality is most kids won't do it until they are ready emotionally - the physical readiness usually comes long before the emotional readiness. Good luck! Teaching a child to ride a bike could be frustrating but never the less can also be fun.If the bike still has it's training wheels, take only one off...and encourage the child to balance herself on the bike and when she gets the balance right tell her to try to start pedaling.Good Luck!!!! Looks like you are going to be getting your excercise running next to her on that bike.....I had taken one training wheel at a time off then they got it down... Unfortunatly for having a mother as a psychologist dont you think she would have some more confidence?? You are the main caretaker so its up too you to give that moral support she needs.. Good Luck~ Wow..nothing like putting the pressure on a kid...lol Riding a bike should be fun! I have a feeling no matter what you do, this is going to end up being a person who is very resentful towards her parents. Take the pressure off, have fun with her. My son was able to ride without training wheels at 3, my daughter at 7. It just depends on the kid. I can only offer some tips I learned through trial and error with my own kids. I would advise having her learn to ride a razor scooter. The balance required to really ride it is very similar to that of riding a bike, but learning is much easier and less scary. Once my kids learned to ride their razors, they picked up the bike in days. The other thing is to hold on to the back of the seat of the bike, not the handlebars, when teaching/helping. First of all, when you hold on to the handlbars you are doing more balancing for the child than you realize. Secondly, when you hold the seat you can let go sometimes and they won't know. If you do that with the handlebars they can see you let go and they freak out. i didnt learn to ride my bike on tar i learned on a camp road and there was a bunch of moss around (i live in maine so it was easy to find a place like this) my mom and dad stood about 10 feet appart and my dad held the back of my bike and told be to petal as hard as i could and eventually he would just let go and i would do it myself. and they would start moving farther and farther appart and then i jus got it my little sister learned when my dad adjusted her training wheels so they didnt touch the ground but if you leaned the bike to either side they would keep the bike stable incase the lost her balance My son learned how to ride is bike in a few days...What happend was one of the training wheels was slack and one was really tight..so whenever he road the bike the wheel that was slack would go up and away from the ground. This was a good thing because he didnt realize the wheel wasnt touching the ground..hahahaha.Eventually the other side of the wheel also got slack and did the same thing. Now I noticed this but left it like that because he was riding and the wheels didnt touch the ground. Then one day i took them off and ....there he was riding his bike by himself...So maybe the parent can loosen one wheel just a litllte bit and see what will happen. My son was so into riding his bike fast that he wasnt paying any attention to the training wheels. |
