He's almost 12 and tried a 26" - he could not touch the ground, but t was probably a medium.
From what I remember for a standard bike( I think BMX bikes are different) there should at least 1 inch clearance between his crotch and that annoying bar that goes across, while his feet are flat on the ground. Height isn't as much an issue as his leg length. Hope this helps. The height of the saddle is adjustable, but I'd get him the largest bike that, with the saddle as low as possible, allows his feet to tough the ground. That part is necessary, and as he grows, the saddle can be adjusted upwards. Have your kid stand with the seat at the lowest position and place his feet on the ground. He should be able to ball up his fist and comfortably place it between himself and the seat while standing on the ground.
