1996 Ford Contour Trunk not opening - IDEAS? HELP?

ok need some new ideas here that I can try -- have a 96 Contour that I never had the Trunk key for -- but it opened with the pull latch/lever beside the seat . Had a kids bike in there one day and a bungee cord holding it closed -- took the bike out and i am not sure if I removed the bungee from the latch --- the next day the trunk wouldn't open --- Checked fuse panel -- there is no fuse for the trunk latch --- and when I pull the lever from inside by the seat I can hear a click in the trunk but it will not open --- also, the trunk lock itself, ( when you use the key) looks partially broken. Do you think the bungee is jammed in and that's why it is not opening, or is there some other problem with contours? any suggestions? ( i don't have a ton of $ to take it in to someone! I have tried to pull the trunk while someone was pulling the lever , but it does not budge -- still as if locked! -- makes me think maybe it's not the bungee -- Is there a trunk release pull inside the trunk? IDEAS?

a couple of suggestions. The seat back in the rear is removable with some force and a little finesse.
that may give you a good indication visually of what's going on.

If it were at my shop, I would likely drill out the offending lock cylinder since its a bugger anyway, and then would be able to open it with appropriate tools.

You might try laying down a few towels on the top of the trunk lid and with flat palms down, apply pressure to the deck lid while someone uses the trunk release and that may work. Have them activate the release trigger while you push down and then let off suddenly. May take a few tries.

ps the lock mechanism is a snap to reinstall once the trunk is open

Sounds like the bungee cord got stuck in the lock, someone tried breaking into and damaged the lock, or that the lock was damaged somehow carrying the bike. I'd take it to a locksmith.
take out the rear seat you may be able to get into the trunk to release it
