What type of dirtbike should i buy KTM or Yamaha?? |
I have owned a 1999 yz250, and am looking to buy a Ktm or yamaha. but dont know if a 125, or 200sx will have the power im looking for in both kinds? are those cc's kids bikes? im 5'11" 145pd and it was good with the yz250, but want a different bike. i could go with the yamaha 450f, but could i reach the ground? I looking for a good one, eathier ktm or yamaha, with power that are good for trails, some jumps, that my feet can touch the ground, and that would be good on maintenance......Please help Thanks KTM's are historically west coast bikes, based on the fact that you can't find dealers or parts for them locally on the east coast without traveling a great distance or mail order. However KTM is a great bike suspension is awesome and power good all the way through the power band. Yamaha 450F is great it's a four stroke with plenty of usable power. The thumpers are the future and you won't out grow the 450F. You can adjust the suspension a couple of millimeters to get you balls of feet to touch. I would recommend the Yamaha 450F and it's a 4 stroke so no mixing fuel/oil, great all around bike. hope this helps. reach the ground? dude you're nearly 6' tall! get a yamaha! Get a KTM 450XC. It is set up for aggressive trail riding, and is suitible for MX. KTM's are the most reliable racing four strokes out there. You will be impressed with this one. 125 and 200 cc bikes are definitely not kids bikes. At your weight either of them would work fine. I'm not aware of a 200 SX, at least not in the US. I'm not sure where you live. The 200 in the US only comes in a woods version, the 200 XC. Height is not an issue so don't even worry about that. There is no difference in the seat height of a 125 and a 450 anyway, only a weight difference. If you plan to ride woods the KTM 200 is hard to beat. I've never heard of problems getting parts or service on the east coast. I live in NC and we have KTM dealers all over. Most of the woods riders and 50 - 85 cc riders around here are on KTM's. I'm not sure why you are considering a 125 or a 450F as opposed to a 125 or 250F. The 450 is fine but just doesn't carve up the turns like a 250F. If you plan to ride mostly woods definitely go for the KTM 200. If you plan to ride mostly MX/SX a 125, 250F or 450F would be good. The 125 or 450 MX bikes do not do well in the woods. The KTM 200 would by far have the least maintenance. One of the Bike shops I worked at was a Yamaha, Suzuki, and KTM. After being there for a year, I purchased an 01' Ktm 200 EXC. And I loved the bike. I mainly just trail rode the bike. But I also ran with B class and 4 stroke riders. And I could hang with them in the trails with no problem. The only place I lost was in fast track sections. And on the monster jumps. The bike flew well, but lacked the over all major suspension qualities. Other than that, I have no complaint besides from the delay of parts. As in the time it took to order and recive them. I ran Maxima Castor 927 at 42:1 for 3 seasons. And I never rebuilt the bike. And I did ride it a lot. I went throught about 6 sets of tires. I and I limited the black top use. I am only 5'6 at a 130 pounds. And I handled the bike just fine. I am not product bashing. I loved the WR426, but I just had such a hard time strating it. And I could ride a YZ125 all day. But I just never felt very comfortable on it. If you can try to ride the bikes, ride everyone you can. And no, KTM's are not west coast bikes. I live in KY. And have worked in shops all over OH, and KY. So KTM's are everywhere. Due to the Fact of the man named John Penton. Who helped bring us the KTM brands. And he's from Toledo. I hope I've helped some. Good luck. 11 years ATV, Motorcyle, and Snowmobile Mechanic. |
