At what age should you be able to ride a small bike w/out training wheels?

I've tried teaching my 4 year old to ride but she is so scared. The neighbors kid is turning 5 this week and her mom seems to think my girl should be able to ride too and laughs when my child dosen't want to learn. Same thing with the pool, My little girl just got comfortable with going under the water and the mom of the other girl picks on her for not wanting to go all the way to the bottom after diving sticks. I think this 5 year wants to do these things because she has an older sibling, her mom thinks its because she is just in a league of her own. I want to be able to teach my girl these things and have fun. Not because I want her to be able to do what the other kid does. If she's not ready I don't want to push her into it am I being a slacker mom?

No way! I agree with you when you say that the other kid is doing it because of her sibling. My son is five and I just taught him how to ride with no training wheels. My daughter is 4 yrs old and she was so jealous when my son learned that she nagged me until I took hers off too. She learned to ride that bike in one day, only because her brother learned the day before. Your not being a slacker mom, if your kid isn't ready for those things, don't force her.
No you are being a fantastic mum understanding the needs of your daughter above anything else, children develop at different rates they are good at different things, I have always taken my children swimming too yet one of them who is almost 11 really struggles, he doesnt like going underwater and finds it hard to swim but he can do the basic needed, I dont believe pushing them is the answer but more an understanding approach to when they want to do it like you are doing creates a sense of security for your child, this lady is wrong to make fun of the child for not doing some things sounds like she just wants competition with her daughter and I would be inclined to tell her you are concerned her comments will upset your child and therefore you would like it if she would keep the opinions to herself afterall the world would be a boring place if we were all the same. You are a great mum dont let anyone tell you otherwise
i think its not about the age but when the child is ready. my 4 year old just learned to ride without his training wheels bc a few days before that his best friend who is 3 learned to. i just took them off held on to him a min and let him go when he got steady and he was off to a big boy riding. the other mom just seems to think her daughter is better. i say let her go at her own pace and learn when shes ready a;; children are diffrent. you do what you feel is right and let her go at her own pace
You are doing just fine. Don't push her and don't let the other mother pick on her much. All kids do things in their own time. My son learned to ride his bike early, but my daughter took two more years. I have another kid that is afraid of nothing! They are all different. So, don't push, but don't let her quit. I know it is a balancing act but you'll do just fine. Good luck
