Which is safer a dirt bike or atv?

What size for each is best for 130 pound kid.

Dirt bike are the safest. If you crash it is going to be 200 pounds landing on you instead of 400 pounds. Also, an ATV provides a false sense of security. You are more comfortable going fast on an ATV because it is more stable but in fact this is bad because you never learn the basics. So, when you're going down the trail at 40 mph and a tree pops out at you, I would rather be on the dirt bike. Look for a Yamaha or a Honda, and get a 125, 150, or a 230. Have Fun. safer, the atv, funner atv. i have an atv its a yamaha rapter 350 SE. if you like dirt bikes get a 125cc bike. if you like atv's get a raptor 350 or the raptor 600. just to let you know the 350 goes 70mps (max speed)
atvs definitly
I ride both, but i would suggest to take into consideration the maturity of the "kid". A bike could be just as dangerous as a quad. A quad or atv is not as dangerous as bike, but there is always a risk when riding these always.
I guess this is more of a "what you like better" question, but there are some inherent facts that may help you choose.
Statistically speaking, dirt bikes are safer than ATV's. The 3 wheel variety got pulled from the market because they were so unsafe. The four wheel variety are more stable than the three wheel, but are still more unsafe than a regular dirt bike.
You can't just stick your foot out going around a corner when driving a four wheeler.
According to most safety reports, the injuries were fewer on a dirt bike and when injuries did happen, they were less severe.
That's not to say that four wheelers aren't great. And as far as versatility goes, you can't beat one for the different tasks it can perform as opposed to a dirt bike.
If you are just looking for straight out fun in the sun though, the dirt bike is safer. I, like you had to decide when purchasing one for my son and went with the dirt bike after doing the research.
Kids are going to grow so If you go with an ATV I would recommend nothing less than a 250. If you go with a dirt bike, I would recommend the enduro variety (street or dirt) of about a 175 or bigger. The enduros can be licensed for street use. I went with a Honda for my son, but nowadays, most brands are realy comparable.
per honda dealer a dirt bike is safer. he said that when you fell down a dirt bike due to the lighter weight will fly to the oposite side but a atv will follow you and land on you. I kinda agree with that. plus atv wait twice more.
