What is up with my doxie? How can i Fix it??? |
I adopted a 6 yr old male doxie (neutered) and when we take walks he barks at people agressivly (never bites) and gets very agitated. Even kids on bikes/skateboards he'll bark at. AND other dogs walking within sight he'll bark at. From what i am to understand is that he grew up with bigger dogs so you think he would have a prob. whaaaat can i do to stop this behavior? Anyone? This problem is fairly simple.. When you are walking, carry a pocket of cat treats. I like them, as they pack more flavor than dog treats, and are tiny for this task...As soon as you see a person or dog approaching, make a noise, such as 'tsk-tsk', that you will only use for this lesson.. Then, when your dog looks up, give him a treat, and a small praise. He will most likely then bark at the approaching person, but ignore it and keep walking....Continue doing this and be vigilant to spot the people before your dog does.. it will take about 14 walks for him to associate approaching strangers with the treat, but soon he will be wagging his tail as people approach, and looking to you for a treat, which will eventually become only praise. Source(s): dog breeder/trainer since 1968 dog training? all dogs of that breed that I know are nasty barkers and hard to house train...good luck with him! Sounds to me like he's under socialized..usually if you take treats with you wherever you go and just ask whoever he's barking at to maybe offer him one of his treats he'll get used to all kinds of people.Just take him places where there are lots of people and dogs very frequently and he'll get used to being around strangers. It will take some time. He may have been abused and is reacting in fear not anger. Offer him treats when you are able to get him to stop and praise him for it each time. Let him adjust to his new world. Please keep him and give him lots of love. It took my friend almost a year before her dog stoped trying to go after other dogs and people. Some dogs just do not like other dogs because something happened to them in the past. My little girl still bites a dog if he sniffs her butt. She was attacked 5 years ago and started doing that right away. I apologize and ask them to just keep the dog away if we are in a dog park. THIS IS SCARRY BUT ID BET IT WILL WORK: TAKE HIM OFF THE LEASH! HE FEELS HE IS IN PROTECT MODE WHEN ON THE LEASH. TRY IT IN A FENCED AREA AND SEE? Well for starters, how long have you had him. If the dog has been with someone else for six years, you have to give him time to adjust to his new surroundings. Also, sometimes barking is natural for them, and he could also be protecting you. Or he might feel scared, and that is his reaction to them. Not all doxie's are the same. I have three, mother, father, and daughter. The daughter barks more when she is playing then at other times. the father is so docile, but he barks like mad at the mail man. So does the mother. But when I take them out for walks, the only one who barks is the little pup(six months old). You will have to work with the male, show him that you are in control, but don't be mean about it. The other breeder did give good advice. Try the treats when walking, or also try and find a good dog trainer to work with you. My friend is one, and she has given me very good ideas, and she does go to people's homes to help them. You just have to have pattience, and work with him. Even thought the dog may have been around other dogs, doesn't mean he was socialized. That is a big part about any dog. If you live in a city, and he came from the country, he is not used to the things that go on in a city. It is all new to him, so he will bark at every little thing that he see's. Sometimes there bark is worse then there bite. My dogs ,when they bark, there hackles go up. which could be taken as agression, or the dog might be scared. Just give him love at all times, and work with him. Don't give up on him, they are like little kids, wanting to be petted, hugged, and shown affection. We love our dogs, and they sleep with us every night. I will keep you in my list, and if you need more help, let me know, and I will get back to you. Hope this did help you some. Have a good night, and just stick with it. |
