What makes them stay? |
My dog can get our front window open. Nothing short of screwing it shut works. (Old house, we rent) We lock the window, leave, and she unlocks it and opens it so the 2 of them can lay half on the window ledge half on the couch all day. My dogs are fearless and this is only a 4 ft. drop to the grass. Mailman, UPS guy, garbage man, kids riding bikes, people walking dogs, so much temptation! (My retired neighbor across the street keeps an eye on them and has a key in case something happens). This is the same window that the cats go in and out of all the time. So why is is that the dogs don't escape? One's a Lab/Pointer mix who can't resist squirrels and the other is a JRT mix who can't resist anything. Thye're young and healthy dogs, why do they not escape to chase critters and other dogs? They surely could. All the neighbors know them and think it's a hoot how they hang out the window. Put "hardware cloth" on the windows (it's really heavy duty-screen). Put them in a different room. They COULD be leaving while you are gone, and getting back in just moments before you get home. They probably have your schedule figured out, dogs catch on pretty quick. Otherwise, I'd say you have some well behaved couch potato lazy dogs! :) I have a pug, and I KNOW for a fact that he'd escape if he could, but we live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex, so that'd be a bit difficult. They may not want to go anywhere without you just in case they cannot get back in. They know where their meal ticket is. Have you ever told them that they had better not go anywhere? Or maybe they don't realize that it is an opening that they can get out of. They see a barrier. Be grateful that they don't run off! I had a horse that was frightened by something (we suspect a helicopter) and must have jumped out of his paddock. Well, we came home from being away for several hours. I THOUGHT that he was on the WRONG side of the fence. He was. He was standing on the other side of the fence looking into where he was supposed to be. He had been there awhile as there were several piles of poop. I guess that just proved that he loved where he lived! |
