Should I just go ahead and find a house for myself?

Last month I presented and idea to my mother of buying a house together... and I still would love too but trying to get financing for a house big enough for both of our families is hard. I can't seem to get anything going, for both of us... however, I can get something just for my family. The real problem is my neighborhood. There are people selling drugs on the corner, they stole my 5ft cactus, rocking chairs, shovel, potting soil, table, purse(for crack I am sure) my kids can't ride their bikes anywhere. The schools are horrible. I have had drug addict bang on my door at 3am begging for change to buy a hotdog!? I don't know how much more I can take!

Tough one...BUT maybe you should try to get two smaller houses or even two apartments in good areas? That way you and your family would be in a good neighborhood but also you'd be able to help your mother.. because if you buy a house for your family only, no matter how good the neighborhood is you would always feel guilty for not helping your mom too... So, talk and figure out a way to help both of you! There has to be a solution. Maybe it would be smaller but in the end you would be happy.

It sure sounds as though you should move! It is terrible that there are neighborhoods like yours. This is more proof to me that the laws need to be tougher.
Go for it--try to get into a decent neighborhood for the sake of your children,and you!Best wishes.
If you're a first time homebuyer then you can get substantial downpayments. That said, you have to think of protecting your children. Get the house in a different neighborhood.
Later, maybe your mother will follow suit and get one too.
Do ANYTHING you can to move away from the scum, your kids deserve better, and so do you.
Get out of there girl..start your life, it sounds like your unhappy about your living situation, get yourself and your family out of there, before some crackhead hurts you or your kids for a couple bucks!
