Why did you get the type of dog(s) you have?

Just wondering why everybody got the dog(s) you have. What made you get the specific breed, or mix, or whatever the case may be? Also, why did you name them what you did?
Here's my reasoning for my dogs.
Telly- Male Chihuahua-he was bought for my oldest daughter. She named him after a famous Thoroughbred race horse (Tell-Like) that my sister's boss owns. My daughter is in love with racing, and since Popite got it for her, she thought she would honor Popite by naming the dog after one of his horses. I brought the pup home while my daughter was away, to surprise her. He was in Texas at my sister's house, and I brought him to Arkansas.
Haylee Bug-Female Black Lab-She was my neighbor's mistreated dog. She came to my house one day, my kids and I fell in love, so we asked if we could keep her. My oldest named her Haylee, Bug was added because my son's nickname is Bug, and she is his dog. I love Labs, had one when I was a kid, named Grizzly. he was the best dog I remember from my childhood.
Grizzly-8 month male Lab- My neighbor had him and his two brothers, who unfortuantely later died from Parvo, poor things didn't stand a chance. Nothing anyone could do for them. Grizzly came up and was such a good dog, the neighbor gave him to us. Named him that because when he sleeps he sounds like a bear when he snores!
Shakespeare--Male Black Lab, found him at work, he appeared to have been ran over, so I took him home and nursed him back to health and still have him. His name was Bear when I first brought him home, because he growls low and long, like a bear. My oldest renamed him Shakespeare, not too sure why. She loves to read, so maybe she read one of his plays.
I have had other breeds, including the world famous Heinz 57, but Black Labs are my favorite. I don't really know if it is the friendly eyes and face, how they are so easy to teach to do things with the kids, or if it is just maybe that when one of the kids or even myself seem to need someone, they are always right there, no matter what. All my dogs have been, but the ones I have now, well, just seem so much more lovable. Also, I have 4 kids, so I need Dogs that can run and play with them. Which Haylee and Grizzly love to play with the kids, or go for walks while the kids ride their bikes. So I guess all of that is why.

Why are people giving thumbs down on some of the answers?

Bandit- Male Tricolor Basset Hound- My husband and I weren't married yet when we got Bandit. We were living in an apartment and I wasn't working and we just decided we would like a dog to have when my husband deployed. We chose a Basset because they aren't tiny dogs (which my husband doesn't like), but not a really big dog. We drove up to pick out a puppy from a breeder we found about a hour from our home. Bandit was the only puppy that seemed to just pull at our heart strings... he went over to my husband and just sat in his lap as if to say "you're taking me, that's it". We named him Bandit from Smokey and the Bandits, and because he liked to steal any food he could get a hold of. He was a perfect dog. Unfortunately, while my husband was deployed in Iraq, Band was diagnosed with a degerative heart condition. His conditions deterated so much so fast that I had to have him put down when he was only a year and a month old in October of 2007. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u311/...

Copper- Male Red and White Basset Hound- Copper was my wedding/valentine's gift from my husband. He was born on December 10th, 2006 in Mississippi and was shipped to us on February 2nd 2007. We still had Bandit at the time and they became like brother. We named him Copper because he is copper colored and it just fit. When I had to have Bandit put down Copper was heartbroken... to him both his daddy (my husband who was in Iraq at the time) and his brother (Bandit) had left him. After that Copper would not leave my side. He was my best friend, and helped me make it through one of the toughest times of my life. He too, is a perfect dog.

Boogity- Male Tricolor Basset Hound- Boogity, or "Boog" as we call him for short is our new Basset puppy. He came from the same breeder (that we LOVE) in Mississippi that Copper came from. He was born on April 17th 2008. My husband and I took a road trip (with Copper tagging along) to pick Boogity up in June. We named him Boogity because we got the idea from NASCAR and my husband thought it was just the funniest name for a Basset Hound. Copper was pretty skeptical of Boogity when we first picked him up, but now they're inseperable. Boogity is an interesting character... he's vocal and opinonate but lazy as heck (if food isn't involved he isn't doing it). He's a momma's or daddy's puppy depending on who he thinks doesn't want to cuddle the moment at the moment. He's demanding but loving, and likes to put Copper in his place. He's a bit of work, but I love him.

All in all we just love Basset Hounds and couldn't have asked for any better dogs. They fit perfectly into our family and the life that we have to live within the Marine Corps. What can I say, we love our Hounds :)

Border Collie- because they have loads of energy and i love going on walks which was no problem. and he is playful which means im never ever bored.

his name is Max- cos my friend thought of it

=D

Boston terriers.

Had them since I was a kid.

okay i only have 1 dog and her name is darla but she answers to vader. (darla vader). but it is because my dad was a starwars nerd when we bought her and i was 3. she is a really funny dog. she always jumps on my bed and sleeps on my legs. (which also fall asleep) and if i stare at my other pets she starts barking for attention. also she sneezes in you face. which is sort of gross and sort of cute

I needed a low maintenance dog that could handle being left alone for 8 hours a day. Plus it needed to be easilly trained, and I'd prefer if it was somewhat territorial. After nuch research, I settled on a rat terrier, and I am very pleased. In fact, I will always strive to own a rat terrier.

Emma Louise is rambunctious enough to where she just patrols the house when I am gone. It's HER house. When I let her out in the yard, she stands on the deck and surveys the yard. God help any squirrel out in the open! When I'm home, she 'surrenders control' to me, but she'll still go on patrol every few minutes. Because of her breed, she'll let me know whenever there's a mouse in the house, and where it's coming from. She's better than any cat in this regard. And to top it off, she's the most loving dog in the world. I just kept her name from the rescue I got her from... she was in a Rottwieler rescue!!! And she was the boss!!!!! All 15 lbs of her.

dizzy is my chihuahua I wanted one really bad we got him from a breeder we named him that because he was so little we wobbled around he is 6 months old
hunter is my dachshund he found us he is the sweetest dog ever I think he's about 1-2

My dad just called one day, said he was at his friend's house who's Peke just had pups. He asked if I was willing to keep one because this specific one was "too adorable". I said yes because I always wanted a dog, even though I had no idea what a Peke was. lol

When she came, OMG I can't explain how adorable she was. She was all dark brown with a white chest. The breeder said that her fur will become golden later. Now she's 11 months old, and I love her soooo much.

I named her JUICY, because it just matches her so much. And she seemed to respond to it pretty quick.

My husband wanted our APBT Max, I did not at first. We were reading up on the breed and my mindset was "He is going to eat my current dog". But as it was, my dog at the time was hit by a car (my stupidity, my fault for not having her leashed). That night he got a call that Max was ready. After long discussion, we picked him up and I fell in love. He has been the best dog I have ever seen, he is so well manered and chill and the biggest baby. My husband named him Max (i think its kind of dull, but it was his choice).

Penny came to us because friends of ours had an "accident", their dog was not spayed and they let a pug stray stay at their house and well you know what happened there. The litter was born and the mom wanted nothing to do with them, she should never have been a mother and is now spayed. So the friend and I spent weeks bottle feeding the pups to get them healthy and I fell in love with the only girl, Penny. So as soon as she was good and healthy I took her home with me. She is the ugliest little thing I have ever seen to be honest, but you cant help but love her.

Thumbs down because where I got my mutt? Or what happened to my old dog? Hey at least I am honest and can admit I was ignorant at the time and should have done better.

I was in 4-H dog project when I was a kid. My 4-H dog project leader showed and bred papillons. I adored her dogs; smart, playful, great temperaments, etc.
This dog is the particular dog that made me fall in love with the breed:
http://s273.photobucket.com/albums/jj237...

As a kid, my parents said no to getting a papillon because we lived on a farm. (Long, white coat + manure & stickers = a mess). So I had to wait until I was an adult to finally get a papillon. And of course, I did my research to make sure it was in fact a good breed for me.

And my girl is actually the great-granddaughter of the papillon in the first picture, the one that got me interested in the breed to begin with! :)
.

Holly--Lab mix. We got her thinking she was an Aussie/Collie mix, but she's mostly Lab. She was named that because I got her exactly one month before Christmas.

<--Lexy--Aussie/Catahoula mix. We got her from a BYB who said she would be a fantastic cowdog because of the mix. She is, but....well, it's over now. I love her to pieces, she's great. Named because I liked the name.

Sam--Shetland Sheepdog. We got him, apparently, because he was "cute". I was 8 at the time.
