Hi . can you tell me , growing up , what were the most favotite gifts you were given as a child ?

me , i remember my " barbie dolls " then i was on a tomboy kick , and loved my tonka trucks . as an older kid , it was a brand new 2 wheel bike . at 13 was the highlight , and i got my horse . how about a few of your "stand out " gifts . have a good eve. d.

i should have said a favorite toy or thing . but LOVE was great .

Lionel train set. Given to my brother who didn't want it so dad sort of took it over and he and I set it up in the basement--he got a huge piece of plywood, set it on legs, and we set up a little town, hills, tunnels, etc. for the train to pass through. It wasn't as extensive as some I've seen since but I loved it 'cause I love trains, love miniature landscapes and loved spending time one-to-one with dad (which was rare since he got mad if you couldn't read his mind, he wasn't much of a talker). I was very artsy and resourceful and have always been able to anticipate my dad's needs (still can) so he liked having me around (this little elf who produced what he wanted without him having to say anything).

I always got great Christmas gifts from my aunt & uncle who adopted me & I appreciated those gifts. My favorite gifts were the dolls I got each year. It was a different one or two each year. This was long before Barbie was born. Along with the dolls I received, my aunt always made my dolls lots of clothes as a Christmas gift. I knew how busy she was around the house, but she made time to sew those clothes just the same.

**stevienick'sfan....Yes, they still sell Colorforms. (Wal*Mart) I bought them for my sons when they were little boys & I bought them for my grandchildren a few years ago.

My Grandmother used to always give me a silver dollar and I loved them even as a child. I kept them and now I have a lot of them. Some of mine were stolen which really broke my heart because of sentimental reasons.

I have a lot of them still and will pass them down to my grand children.

I also liked getting money of any denomination. I realize that is not usually a child's favorite gift and especially today when children have everything. But, I am a senior citizen and things were much different back then I have no clue what to give children these days.

One of my favorite gifts was a Codie doll, like Barbie but not as costly. Mother paid for a dress of the month club where a new outfit was delivered monthly for a year. Marvelous!

Grandmother always got me a dressy outfit and paid for premier showings of the old classics: Ben Hur, King of Kings, The Bible, etc.

The latest best gift was my mother's rocking chair she used as a child, with one of my first baby dolls sitting in it wearing the Christing gown that I was baptised in as a child! This is just awesome. She is now in a nursing home and we talk of good old days. This is just pure love that she continues to give.

I always loved to get books or jig saw puzzles.
The year I was born, my 3 great aunties started me on a sterling silver silverware set. Each birthday, christmas, graduation or other significant occasion, I would get a spoon, a fork, or a knife from the three of them. When I got married, I got the cake lifter, pickle fork and gravy ladle. I probably didn't appreciate that very much as a little girl but I certainly appreciate the lovely set of Louis XIV set I now have. Needless to say, the way silver went up from 1950, none of the other nieces were started on a set so I was very lucky.

My Auntie Virginia (bless her, she's in heaven now) bought me a kid's size kitchen set. The sink and refrigerator were avocado colored aluminum, and the sink had a plastic vessel that you could fill with water, which would flow into the sink (cool!). The stove was German-made, white and made of wood, with knobs that turned. She got me a German-made set of kid sized pots and pans, all made of stainless steel and strong enough to withstand the heat of a real stove. My Auntie Sumiye was a preschool teacher, and she made me a big batch of homemade play-dough (which was so much more fun than the store-bought stuff because she would make a couple of pounds of every color!) I made lots of "cakes" and "pies" in that oven. Great question - thanks for making me think of these wonderful ladies and the best toys I could have wanted.

Love was indeed great. I had tons of that!
My favorite things were a bride doll that I got one year for Christmas that I dearly loved. The other thing was a book of The Wizard of Oz, that was absolutely beautiful. I read it and read it and wish I knew what happened to it. I would love to have it back. my mother bought it for me when I was about 8 at a school book fair. That was about 1958. It was about 14" high and maybe 12" wide and white. It had the most beautiful art work I had ever seen.

Should have been a child's table and chair set. I saw it briefly, blond wood, with a high gloss shine on Christmas morning as my dad was carrying me out to the car. A family emergency took us from NJ to Maine that early morning. When we returned the following week, our house had been burglarized and the table and chairs--gone. Our family didn't have much money, so there was no question of replacing it. Although it broke my heart then, now, as an adult, it awes me that my father actually made the sacrifice to buy it in the first place. And I take more pleasure in the memory of it than if I had actually possessed it.

My grandfather mailed us each a check at Christmas each year for $100, no matter what age you are, that is always and was, a lot of fun to be able to go spend that money on whatever toys you wanted. Considering we had six kids in the family, and he sent mom and dad each $250, it was so wonderful of him!

When I was around 14 I got a princess style phone. I just absolutely loved that phone, it had the rotary dial that lit up when you made a call.

I think I was probably 12 when I got the "close and play" record player.

When I was younger I remember getting a Pebbles doll.

Mia

My dad bought me a manicure set when I was 12. I felt so grown up since I no longer had to rely on just using fingernail clippers to do my nails. Funny thing is, now I just let my hands go and clip my nails when necessary as I'm constantly getting them grubby anyways.

I absolutely can remember my absolute joy when I opened a plastic case full of Barbie clothes and a new Barbie doll! So many pretty clothes! Oh...I just absolutely loved it!

"Thumbelina" I didn't ask for her. Mom got her for me because she thought she was cute. She said, "Thumbelina was so ugly she was cute." I loved that doll !!! I think I will go call her and tell her !!!

As a 6 yr. old I got a "sonny boy" doll./at 13 I also got a new bike. At 15 i got my new leather coat. From that on I think it was mostly clothes, except a watch and a mustard seed necklass. And yes I had all the love in the world too.

a DOLL bunk bed set which I used for stuffed animals (I hated dolls), and my Mom sewed matching comforters and pillows for it....

You might not beleave me but the fruit we got at Christmas in our stocking was the best.We got one gift from Santa and our stocking full of nuts and fruit. We were blessed.

Roy Rogers western capgun and hat set.

A Red Ryder bibi gun.

The best gift I was given as a child was love.

Mine was a hand carved yo yo given to me by a underground miner just because he liked me, I was 7 at the time

A tricycle

A banjo

My favorite was a new bicycle at Christmas.

Colorforms. I loved loved loved Colorforms.

Do they even still make them? I don't think so.

a dog

my mom hugged me

A doll that when you turned it over say mama.I loved that doll.
