Front yard is uneven and sloped downhill how do I level it for kids to play, grass with trees/flowers?

I drive downhill onto rough uneven dirt filled yard to get to front yard. I would like a level yard with no bumps. Land is very sandy and rain water washes downhill to the right. Kids can't enjoy playing or riding their bikes. I would love to have trees flowers, and beautiful shrubbery with grass in my front yard. Please help

Bring the lower end up!! THat's going to be the only way to do it. Get a lot of backfill dirt. My step mother had to do the same with her yard. Now it has a fence around it..beautiful grass and trees.

First thing is to fix your grade and erosion issues.

Depending on what you wish to spend, you have several options.

See if a landscaper can come give you an estimate to do what you need, since dirt work is back breaking, you might find it the best and most cost-effective treatment for your problems.

The cheapest option is to till and level the dirt yourself. You will want to do this in the fall when the conditions are best for starting a lawn. It is too hot to start grass seed now.

You could also have topsoil trucked in. Depending on the size of the area you may wish to hire a landscaping company to grade it for you. If your area is small you could use a wheelbarrow to move it and use a good old fashioned 2x4 plank to level it.

Sounds like you need a bit of erosion control as well. Go to the library and find books on retaining walls and erosion control, they will help you decide how to treat your rainwater issue.

As far as your steep front area, you could terrace it and plant low maintenance perrenials. Again, hit the books and maybe ask some neighbors or the folks at your local garden center for some help. Next spring your yard should be lush and beautiful!

Good luck and happy gardening!

It sounds like you need paving, or a concrete driveway, once you have established where the path will be for the car and people, then you can concentrate on the shrubbery and landscaping.
Rome was not built in a day!

Where it is uneven put down dirt and keep doing that till it wont wash down with the rain and the plant grass seed.

Hi:
I am a landscaper and designer. I live in a hilly region and many people have the same problem that you do in my location.

Leveling the yard on a slope is a difficult task, as most of the time you cannot prep it with a tiller. There are a couple of things you could do to enhance the beauty of your yard. Your soil is sand base, and a possibility would be to bring in some good quality top soil to spread after you do some prep work. If you have weeds, you can put down a weed killer. This is the first step in the preparation phase. Wait a few days up to a week, to make sure the roots of the weeds are dead. Rake out the area as best you can.

You can purchase the commercial landscape fabric, Jute. This is made of burlap and is used especially for incline, slopes and hills. Its primary purpose is to help stop erosion. It will also hold your plant specimens in place. There are different evergreen and low maintenance plants you can put
in your yard. I will link you to the simple solutions section of my website. There is a page on slope planting with evergreens. You can also add some series of decorative rocks on your slope. This will also help with the erosion.

I hope I am understanding your question correctly. The other option you have is to contact some landscapers in your area and have them come out and do an estimate on escavating your hill and leveling it out. A lot of landscapers will give you free estimates. Know what your options are before you decide on a plan of action. I will link you to the plan - prep - plant page, as this is an easy method to plan any landscape project. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other articles, tips or techniques that may help you with your project. If you need further help, feel free to contact me. Good luck to you and have a great day!
