What age do kids typically start to learn to ride a bike?

Sorry for such a silly question, but I'm just not sure.

I have a new toddler bike with training wheels for my niece. She is 2 now (3 in September). I'm not sure if she'll be able to start riding this summer, or if I should wait until her birthday or Christmas to give her the bike so she can ride next summer. Or, is 3 even too young?

Thanks in advance!

She can probably start riding now, depending on the size of the bike. You want a bike that is correctly sized. A child will go through several bikes. There is not a one size fits all. My kids are on their fourth set of bikes and they are 8 & 9. They began riding at 2 1/2. One was riding without training wheels at 3 1/2 and the other at 4 1/2.

I was without training wheels at 3 1/2 too.

It's easier when they are young. They have less of a fear. Only with age do we develop fear.

I got my first tricycle when i was 2 and I got my first bike when I was 5.

My daughter has a bike w/ no pedals to practice her balancing and she also has a trike to work on pedaling. She was 2 last Nov and we've already had her on it this spring.

Last summer we had her on the trike with a handle so we could give her the little bit of power while she got used to the movement of the pedals.

She LOVES both of her bikes and wants to ride them all the time.

Three is a good age. They will be able to improve their large motor skills. (leg muscles)
Your niece will probably enjoy the bike. My daughter was about 2 and a half when she started riding her trike. She loved it.
Good Luck

i wasnt able to get my first bike till i was 5, but i immediately got rid of the training wheels....
it can never be too early, as long as you teach your child the motions and keep them safe, i would only let them use the bike when you are watching until you are sure they know what they are doing

3 is a good time to give a bike with training wheels. Keep in mind that it takes a bit to get the concept of peddling.

i think two is too early to expect anything unless she is very mobile and coordinated [and can pedal her own weight]. my nephew is almost four and still cannot coordinate well enough to pedal. i'd say 4.5-5 is roughly a good time when they are a bit stronger.

when you take off the training wheels, and let them GO :)
