Bike attachment for dogs?

(1 y/o male cocker)

So a couple of weeks ago, I started to bike with my dog daily. I have his leash around my wrist and he's doing excellent even when passing other dogs....the problem is when we pass kids playing with balls or pucks, he goes after the ball cutting in front of the bike and one of these days I will fall and break my face on the ground!

If I get a bike attatchment will I have a better control? If I fall with that attatchment on isn't it more dangerous for the dog? he can't get out of the way.

Thanks,

Thanks guys, for those who didn't notice up top my dog is an American cocker.

Bike attachments are the best option. They keep the dog to the side and a little behind you, on a pole with a spring. When they pull the spring flexes, though they work well in keeping the dog away from the bike. I hear they don't really pull you over even if the dog lunges.

They are hard to find though. I've been to all the pet and bike stores in my area and can't find them. You may have to order online.

Even witht he bike attachment it wont be good enough, it will be better, but maybe you could just let your dog off your lead?
Sorry, if that is not possible, i dont know your dog and what breed he is....

If you have a small breed dog, you can get a harness, like a kangaroo pouch. I bought one for $20 at a street fair. Look at Petsmart or Petco.

there is something called Springer

you can find on the internet. I have never used it.

I'm curious too. I've been wanting to try biking, but I'm afraid my dog will kill me.

Marking this so I can check out the advice.

Being a cyclist and a dog lover..... unless your dog is a size to fit in a specialized dog/bicycle trailer, leave the dog at home. I have provided a link below for the dog trailer. My Jazz has one and she digs it. There are also crate sized pads you can put inside for a more "plush" ride for your dog. Do check the tires and replace if necessary, the ones that come with the trailer are pretty cheep and lumpy.

I was in a dog-related cycling accident last summer, and I'm still having surgery to fix me! (Wasn't my dog that was in the accident). And, having your face broken is a big deal (been there, done that).

The springer attachment on bikes for dogs.....never tried it and never will. I haven't met an experienced Roadie that would. That's sayin' somthin'.

Don't forget to wear your helmet & have fun!
