I am looking to buy a motorcycle/scooter. Mainly for gas savings. I only want to spend 1000-1200.

Point me in the right direction.

Check out

http://www.powersportsetc.com

you can find just about every option there good luck.

craigslist is where i got mine

The right direction is a stop at the local library for the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles" Read some chapters about bike selection, beginers bikes & riding safely

The next step is too go to: www.scootertherapy.com Find & read the section about bikes that are too cheaply made to repair.

Now, go to www.craigslist.org and search your city under motorcycles

It's hard to go wrong with any Honda in running condition. They continue to work & run well even after 10 thousands of miles and parts are readily availible.

If you buy a scooter or moped, you don't need a cycle license. Over 50cc then it's a motorcycle and you'll need to get a cycle endorsement. Your call.

I would say check out craigslist or scoot.net for a used Vespa or Lambretta. Here is one for 1400

I am sure you can find more, this is the first one I saw. They are the original, made out of sheet metal, and will last forever. Also the engines are more simplistic (two stroke) so they will be easier to fix if it ever breaks. A ever growing support group for scooter riders are in the yahoo groups and they are usually ready to help with any questions. Also for 1200 you'll probably get a larger displacement then if you went new. Typical gas economy is 70-100 mpg depending on displacement and how well the engine runs

Start looking in the "Pree Owned" or thoroughly used section of your local Want Ad

"New To Scooters" thread

Well, for your price range. you'll not going to find much brand new, except Chinese Scooters. Don't BUY Them!! You'll might find a second hand, trade-in or pre-owned from a local Honda or Yamaha Motorcycle dealership. They might bargain to free up space in their dealership. Whats the difference between buying from them and a friend of yours. Dealer would have the bike checked out and inspected first before selling them.
