Are Vespas (the lil gas scooters) easy to steal??

That is just one of my concerns because i REALLY want one ( ill be living only like 10 minutes drive away from my work, and can get there on the streets on a scooter.
but..
1. arent they easy to steal? couldnt someone just pick it up and put it in their pickup bed?
2. everyone thinks its a BAD idea cause i am somewhat accident prone. are they very dangerous?
3. when it rains, is it easy to slip or something?

thanks for any feedback! :)

1. Yes, they are. If you don't have something secure to lock it to or a secure place to lock it IN, there is a real chance it will be stolen if you live or work someplace where that happens.

2. If you're talking about an unmodified 50cc scooter, they're not much more dangerous than a bicycle. They top out at speeds you can reach on a bicycle...it's just easier to MAINTAIN those speeds. You should get a helmet, a jacket, and always wear long pants when riding.

The jacket is probably the most important thing after the helmet...you're most likely to hit the ground with your arms or shoulders, and your skin will just rip right open when you impact ANY road surface.

I've hit asphalt (and dirt, and gravel) at scooter-like speeds on a bicycle (so...from a higher position and much more violently). It is highly unpleasant, but as long as you don't break your skull or neck, or get impaled on something, you'll survive it, and probably walk away from it. But the proper gear would make it suck a lot less.

3. Duh. So be careful.

Yes they are. If you live that close use a bicycle.

America is just feeding your fear so you will buy more stuff. If you're afraid someone's going to steal it, you might buy a lock for it. If you think you might slip, you'll buy a helmet, and elbow and knee pads. The bottom line is: Can you afford all the other stuff? Or forget the junk, and face your fears?

1) anything is easy to steal if someone wants it bad enough. If youre that worried, get a lojack system.
2) If you are accident prone, learn to drive properly. Youll splatter yourself all over the road in one of these. id bet money that youre accident prone because youre unattentive. Best way to get yourself killed is to lose the protection around you.
3) Dont ride one when it rains. Another good way to end up splattered on the concrete.

Put a scooter in a pick-up bed, simple. People steal H-D's like that down here and they weigh close to 700 pounds! I have a 16 foot long 3/4 inch cable and a four rated Master lock. I lock my hog to an oak tree since I don't have a garage.

Accident prone. You will stop being accident prone on two wheels for one of two reasons; you will get tired of being hurt, or you will be dead. If you are truly accident prone you need a Buick Roadmaster. Any of the early 90's models will do it. If you get hit by a bus driving one of those, someone will have to pull you over to tell you it happened.

I live in Florida. I don't know if you looked at the avatar pic but I ride every day, rain or shine. I am not accident prone. When it rains I ride very carefully. Slow, straight up, turns and no major hits to either the throttle or the brakes. It is easy to drop your ride if you give it too much juice, (Maybe not a scooter.) or hammer the brake. Especially the front one. That will drop you like the head pin on the pro bowlers tour! And you have to watch where you put your feet down when it rains. Painted arrows and lines, puddles of oil and anti-freeze, will have you on your side without even time to say "Oh crap".

It sounds to me like you should carry lots of insurance, and hope they steal it before you have an accident. You have to be a positive person to ride, and you don't sound very positive. But, your choice is your choice. If you do decide to ride, work on a better mind-set for it. Take care, ride safe. Ciao!
