i live in california
and i wanna know the rules to riding a gas scooter..do i need a permit or something Check with Cali's DMV. Here in GA there is a ' moped ' law. 49 cc or less, gas & go ( no shifting ),stock speed capable of no more than 35 mph. 14 yrs old is no lic. required.15 & up at least a permit. No insurance required. It depends on the CC's. If you have under 50 cc's, you don't need a license or insurance (not sure about the helmet, but it is a REALLY good idea), which is why a lot of people like them. For 50 cc's and over, you need a license (M1), helmet, and motorcycle insurance. If you have one of those little gas scooters that you drive on the side of the road, then you're on your own there.
The motorcycle handbook from DMV is here and has all the info you need (because of course you don't want to trust some schmuck from Answers with something this important :P).

Good luck!!
<edit> I should have added that you need a permit before getting a license, so assume that I meant permit/license when I answered above.... You need a M2 or M1 license.
With an M1 license, you may ride any type of motorcycle.
With an M2 classification, you will be permitted to drive a motorized bicycle, a moped, a bicycle with an attached motor, or a motorized scooter only.
So to answer your question, if the scooter is less than 50cc, you need at least an M2 (which is just a written test) |
