i want a gas scooter for the summer, where can i find a somewhat cheap one, that can go at least 40-45 mph....i live in illinois, is there any stores or online places to buy quality ones from......im trying to avoid ebay too A 150cc 4-stroke scooter has a top speed of around 55-60 mph on level ground (slower on hills). Check your regional craigslist > for sale > motorcycles for used scooter values . . Honda, Yamaha, Kymco.

The China "crate" scooters are always a "pay your money and take your chances" situation . . choose your vendor carefully . . at least check their BBB report.

Don't forget to budget for proper safety gear . . this video shows why.
http://dynamic.cnn.com/apps/tp/video/us/... Never ever ever buy one online, no matter who it is. Too many horror stories about ripoffs, bad service and trying to get them running and registered, and if they break you're absolutely on your own. Buy from a local dealer. I can't imagine that in Chicago there's not at least one dealer. Chinese import scooters are the cheapest. I have a Tank Urban Sporty 150 that I got at a dealer. It's a blast to ride aroudn town and it gets around 65 miles per gallon. Baron is another pretty good brand. There are lots of others. Don't expect much from any scooter that's priced under a grand, and for God's sake don't get anything under 150cc if you expect to go over 30 miles an hour. 50cc scooters are simply mopeds with no pedals. There's a buttload of 50cc scooters out there and none of them will go over about 35 miles an hour. Even a 150 like mine is only good for about 50-55, regardless of what the ads say. For what you want, I would highly recommend a 150, and you can expect to pay between $1,000 and $1,500 for a usable Chinese unit. Double that for something like a People or a Diamo, and triple it for a Vespa or some other high-end unit. |
