Does Anyone Know If gas scooters under 50cc are street legal in Illinois? |
i have seen on ebay and retailer websites that any powersport vehicle (scooters, go carts, etc.) under 50cc is street legal. If it exceeds this, you have to be 16 and have a license and title and things like that. I can't find this online using a search engine but i was just hoping someone out there knew. Thanks!!! Most gas scooters are about 49cc and can go on most surface streets, not exceeding 30mph/50kmph. if these scooters are just scooters (with no pedals) then they have to be insured, the driver must have a license, but it doesn't have to be a motorcycle license, it can be a car license. but if you go over the 49cc mark then you need a motorcycle license. yes, they are universally legal throughout the us as long as it doesnt exceed this. They don't have enough power to get out of the way of a moving vehicle. You might as well put a big sign on your back that says"hit me". Thats like playing russion roullette with your life. A bicycle would be better, and faster. From the reference I found, it looks like 48cc is the largest engine you can have on a moped...however there are other restrictions on registration, insurance and the like. Check the link below for more info. Illinois DMV There are restrictions on where you can drive them, but yes they are legal for around-town use. If you need one to buzz around town or a campus you can have it. Not good for on the highway though, I'd keep it in town, and even then try to stay off the main arterial streets. I don't know where they're getting that idea from. At least around here, regardless of displacement, it is a motorcycle and must meet all requirements for motorcycles to be street legal. If it does not meet these requirements, it is considered a "toy vehicle" and is not street-legal anywhere. |
