Someone stole a scooter, and told the cops they gave it to me. Can I press charges for filing false report?

My ex's crazy, convict brother stole a $750 gas powered scooter, and tho I'm not sure how the cops found out he did it, he brought them to MY house, and told them he gave it to me and my sons. It is COMPLETELY UNTRUE!! (This is the type of guy who robs a liquor store from someone who's known him his entire life-real bright huh? ) His is TRULY BIZARRE!! I gave permission to the cops to search my house & property. They found no scooter, (because there was never one here! grrrr!) but they did accuse and harrass me!! Can I press charges against this nut case for implicating me in this?? It is Sooooo NOT TRUE!!

The nut even went to my boyfriend's job and told him I was going to jail one way or the other today!! (He's out on bail) I think in his drunken mind, he thinks he REALLY DID give it to us, when actually, I think he gave it to one of his other "EX" sister in laws, and just can't remember which one of us it was. My bf told him he was out of his mind and to get the hell out of there, but I'm really starting to worry about this guy. He's been IN prison more than he's ever been out, and he's the type of guy who spits in his girlfriend's FACE and hits her in the head with hammers. I'm tellin ya, he's a PSYCHO!! So not only have the cops TOTALLY freaked me out, (I thought they were supposed to be the GOOD guys) but now this lunatic is running around town thinking it's MY FAULT he's going to jail, instead of accepting responsibility for being a theif and a liar. (Not to mention, a completely DERANGED lunatic!) It's scary!

I'd say the less you have to do with this man the better. If you file a civil lawsuit against him for filing a false report, you stand a good chance of pissing him off even more. In addition, you'll have to deal with either him or an attorney in court. I doubt the judge would give you enough financial compensation to risk retaliation after the fact.

You might be better off if someone somewhere does find the scooter and can trace it directly to Mr. Potato Head. He'll get his, with theft charges and all.

It sounds like the police pushed the line, but didn't cross it. From their point of view, a confessed criminal was making their job easier by naming names and locations. If you HAD received that stolen scooter, they didn't want you denying, denying and denying. By putting you on the defensive, they could tell if you were lying or not. The search would have exonerated you anyway. So essentially you have a horrific story to tell about the local police force and more proof that your ex's brother is crazy as a loon. What more could you hope to gain from a lawsuit?

I believe you may be able to sue for libel. Libel is making false accusations against someone.

you might want to get an attorney and consult him or her, JUST IN CASE he wants to pull you into court. ask an attorney if you can file false accusation charges on this bozo good luck

No, because your ex's bro lied about what he did with the scooter but he did not file a report claiming you stole it from him. He made up a lie and the cops had to check it out before he could prosecuted for resitution. He must of sold the scooter and try to lie saying you had it, If the scooter was found he wouldn't have to pay resitution along with his criminal sentence.

Well, you definitely have grounds to bust his skull or his jaw..... False accusations can cause life time sorrows so yes, press charges and make the sucker pay!
