I want to purchase an electric scooter or moped (maybe gas), but I don't want to have to get an M2 license for California. Are there any options? Anyone have a suggestion for the best transportation 5 miles to work? You may try to get your hands on a moped. Most people confuse scooters and mopeds. Scooters don't have paddles and, unless you're talking about a skateboard with a handle, you will need to get the M rating plus insurance to ride one. If on the other hand you want a moped, which is basically a bicycle with a motor, you MAY not need the licence. You can check the motorcycle handbook avaliable online at: www.dmv.ca.gov
