Best moped/street legal scooter?

I live in a downtown area where there are some hills. I've been looking for a good moped or scooter to get me to and from class and work, both about a mile away.

Should I go with electric or gas? What is the best model or company (in your opinion) to go with?

Wow. The ones people have been suggesting are rather beastly. I don't need much, and I don't want to spend much, either.

Research the craigslist > for sale > motorcycle listings for your region . . every state is different, but most require a motorcycle driver license, registration, and insurance for over 50cc/30mph.
A 49cc 4-stroke scooter may slow down to 5-10mph on hills (depending on the grade), so if you need to keep up with traffic a 150cc (or larger) size would be more suitable. It is usually illegal for motorized scooters to travel in bicycle lanes or on the sidewalk.

Is only one VESPA!

I was thinking the Vespa, too. Moto Guzzi used to make a good one a long time ago, if you want to stick with the European brands. The Japanese make a good product, too.
Test drive them and put them to the test- see how they do with wet hills, but watch out for gravel on the curves. Gas- for sure. Ride on.
