Roketta sicily-50 scooter?

I have a friend who bought this scooter and at first it wouldnt go past 15 miles an hour he contacted the manufacturer and they said it was probably the carb. so I replaced it and now the thing wont run at all. It will start for a few seconds if you put gas in the carb but then dies out. does anyone know what I can do? Im an auto mechanic so its kinda the same just smaller. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hay Naro, go with gy650's answer! It shore sounds like it's not getting fuel!

ADDED: Although I am not personally familiar with this engine, some of these small engines have a fuel pump driven off the the valve train. Follow the fuel line from the tank and see if it disappears into the engine before reappearing. If so it's running to the fuel pump!

Check the set screw that allows fuel into the carb. Too far out chokes itself on its own fuel too far in not enough fuel. Good luck.

If you have not already done so:
1. Ensure in-line fuel filter is not plugged.
2. Ensure vacuum operated fuel valve at tank bottom is functioning . . is 2nd line from carb "sucking" . . internal diaphragm may have a hole or tear in it.
3. Remove fuel tank cap while testing, just to rule out a cap vent issue.

If you bought the scooter used and if it has been sitting around you may want to do the following:

1. Pump out the old gas and clean the tank as best as possible, then replace with fresh gas.
2. Make sure that that fuel line and the air line is attached properly. If you are not sure, ask someone that knows about scooter carbs. If you are standing on the left side of the bike, the fuel ine usually goes down on the bottom left port. and the air line could be on either side of the carb. If gas shoots out of the Muffler then you have the lines cross. If the bike starts up after you prime the carb then cuts off, you are burning up the gas that you introduced into the carb and gas is not getting into the carb from the tank. Or the gas is bad, hence, water, trash, or something else.

If the bike was lying on its side, that could be a problem as well. Oil tends to go where it shouldn't causing the motor to hesitate and cut off.

3. Make sure that you can get the Rich/Lean screw and have prime the carb again. Then while you have a flat head screw driver at the Rich/Lean screw, have someone start the bike. Adjust the screw, too far either way will cause the carb to choke out so find that perfect medium.

4. Although there are times when we can't get the correct Carb, minor modifications can be made to accomodate the carb.

Good Luck
