What do I do if I want to buy a moped or scooter to drive one road in San Gabriel, California?

I really need to save money on gas, therefore I am thinking to get a moped in the near future. Yet, does anybody know what should I do if I buy a street legal moped or scooter? Do I need to buy insurance? Can I ride it on the freeway? Please help me with my question if you happen to know the answer.

You cannot take a moped on the highway and neither can a scooter which cannot attain highway speeds. If I were to ride a scooter on the freeway, I wouldn't feel comfortable in something with less than 400cc. Anything less and you just don't have enough power to accelerate in a safe enough manner. In order to ride the scooter, you'll need an M1 endorsement on your driver's license and insurance. Insurance for scooters is pretty cheap, I used to pay $80/yr for liability only for my 50cc Zuma.

Yes. It's cheap. Ask for minimum legal insurance, without Uninsured Motorist.

Only the biggest scooters can go on the freeway. It depends on your vehicle's horsepower. Must be 15 hp or above.

Consider getting a motorcycle instead -- one that can easily go 65 mph. I had a Honda Nighthawk 450. It did all right on the freeway.
