Gas octane - which to use?

I've just had a 125 scooter motor rebuilt ( I live in Taiwan ) and the mechanic told me to use 92 rating fuel. This is the lowest octane here. 92, 95, 98 are the choices. Why would a lower octane rating be better for a new engine?

Wrong!

In the USA they use a formula for Octane rating. R+M/2

You will find it on the pump at any service station in the US.

There are 2 different octane rating methods. Research Octane Number or RON and the other is Motor Octane Number or MON.

MON is much more accurate and tends to be lower for the same rating of fuel than RON rated fuel.

In the USA we use the 2 added together divided by 2, which gives an average rating. In Taiwan 92 rating is the same as 87 in the USA and your 98 is the same as our 92 rating!

My advice as an expert. Use the 98 octane....

You might get by with the 92 but then again if it is too low you might also burn a hole in the piston by the time you find out it will be too late. The little scooter uses so little fuel that the amount you save is not worth the risk that you take...

Or you can always, just take your chances...

Good Luck

.

Small engine without high compression. 92 is fine.

omg def. 92. its a waste to get anything else.

Buy the 92 octane. Engines are designed to use varying grades of octane for a whole bunch of reasons that don't matter right now. Buying a higher grade of fuel than the engine requires is a waste of money.

depending on what the manufacter recommends, that's the best advice i can give

92n is ok , you could go as low as 84 if you find it

just use regular 92. the other stuff burns hotter.

It's not better to have the lower octane gas. It is WASTE to use anything higher.

Octane rating is an ability of gas to withstand pressure without igniting on its own from pressure alone. If the engine is designed for 92 octane, that is what you need. Any higher, you will not get any benefit.

that what the motor was made to run on your wasting money on higher octane
