Plateau question? |
I have plateaued after loosing 85 pounds since Yule season (dec). I have 60 pounds more to lose. This plateau has lasted nearly 3 weeks. I can't cut my calories down any more or I will not be eating anything. My activity levels are very high with massive amounts of walking, upper body weight lifting and stationary bike riding done each day. The Doctor says to just be patient but this is driving me nuts. On the other hand my body is healthier than it has ever been. My body strength, stamina and firmness has increased nearly 6 fold. Any suggestions as to why this plateau is holding out so long? I am 50 and no I have NOT BEEN CHEATING! THis is a life or death situation folks-----I'm too old and too smart to mess this up. The cold water of reality has been splashed on me in the form of a mild heart attack a couple of years ago and other health problems that will sober anyone up. You have to vary your routine . . . your body is used to what you're doing. Eat only protein one day, only fruit the next, only yams or steamed veggies the day after that . . . then return to your regular diet, but take a careful look at your protein and carb levels, and % of calories from fat. It's less about how many calories as it is where we get them from at our age! Same thing with your exercise routine . . . take a day completely OFF. Go on a long hike or a 100 mile bicycle ride instead of your usual routine. Change your exercises---go high rep low weights one day, high weight low reps the next. Try different exercises, different order of exercises . . . anything to give your body something completely different and new to deal with. Every once in awhile, our bodies just get in a rut . . . you have to throw 'em a nice hairy curve ball to wake everything back up. I don't know for sure if this would work, but I lost 37 pounds last year on the South Beach diet, and I stopped and got onto maintenance since I reached my goal, but I have found that the fat cells are still there waiting to gobble up any forbidden bit of sugar, and if I do eat a bit of sugar, I gain that bit back right away. The diet is essentially eating proteins and no simple carbs. You can eat complex carbs when you get to your weight, but not at first. The diet is really simple. For the first 2 weeks you eat only proteins, like meats, chicken, cheese, eggs, nuts, oils. No bread, rice, pasta, fruit, alcohol, or any sugar of any kind. You can eat all veggies except carrots. I lost 11 pounds in 2 weeks. I more or less stayed on this fairly strict part for about 3-4 moths and lost the weight. I'd try the South Beach diet if I were you. It is logical and simple, and the physiology of weight gain is laid out very simply. He talks about the relationship between sugar intake and heart disease, you might find it very interesting. I wish you blessings on getting down off your present plateau. Let me know if you try it and how it goes. Blessings, Lady Morgana )0( |
