I'm trying to find some information on a Rudge Whitworth cycle.? |
It's a folding commuter bike, the model is a Transport GS7. As a young apprentice i worked on some rudge whitworth bikes all of them were pre war and older, Rudge in its day was known as the rolls Royce of motorcycles from the twenty's on they had innervation's that were so far ahead of anything in there day. i remember that they had an rear chain oilbath , something not introduced to modern bikes until the late sixty's , there were many other innervation's but it is so long ago i cannot remember all of them . But never did i ever see the bike that you describe and i worked on motorbikes for 12 years before going on to heavy vehicles . You have a rare old beast there it should be in a museum Source(s): The mechanic What do you want to know about it? See the site below..; http://www.sponend.org.uk/hist/hhrudge.h... Daniel Rudge (1840鈥揓une 26, 1880) was a British engineer who built high-end bicycles and velocipedes. Rudge invented the adjustable ball bearing bicycle hub (British Patent No 526) in 1878. The French racing cyclist Charles Terront, renowned for winning the first Paris-Brest-Paris event in 1891, used Rudge's axles with much success thereby bringing world attention to Rudge. In the years before John Dunlop invented the pneumatic tire, Rudge addressed the rough ride by producing a four-bladed, spring-suspended fork in 1887. After Rudge's death, his company was merged with The Tangent & Coventry Tricycle Company to form D. Rudge & Co. which in 1894 became Rudge Whitworth Cycles. By 1911, the Rudge Whitworth Cycle Company was also manufacturing motorcycles. After the company fell on hard times in the Great Depression, the music company EMI bought the Rudge name. EMI produced bicycles under the Rudge name from 1935 until 1943 when they sold the name to Raleigh. |
