Bicycle tire question.? |
What't the difference between a folding bead and wire bead tire ? One better than the other? Thanks. First. A folding bead tire is generally lighter than a wire bead tire. Not stronger!!!! As for with is better, it depends on use. I race pro downhill, on a course that is smooth and fast I will run a folding bead single ply side wall. On Dh courses that a covered in sharp rough rocks a dual ply wire bead tire is needed. For general XC/Road riding folding is the ticket, its a great way to save rotating weight. Many brands make wire and folding in the same tread pattern. Source(s): Work at shop and race. Folding bead you are able to store folded up as opposed to the round shape of the wire bead. Folding is harder than wire to put on the first time. Folding will stretch a little and be easier than wire if you take it off and put it back on. Folding are generally more expensive. Folding are usually a little more heavy duty than wire. A folding bead you can fold up and carry with you as a spare if you need to. Usually I just carry extra tubes. The folding beads are a bit more expensive, but good deals can be found. I have never had good luck installing wire bead tires on my rims, it is very difficult to get that last few inches of tire bead on the rim, that is why I prefer folding beads. folding bead tires have a kevlar bead that can fold. these are very easy to install and take with you. they are generally a bit lighter than wire bead tires. wire bead tires have a steel bead that holds the tire on the rim. its a pain if you have to change tires often. folding bead tires are the way to go. they are a few dollars more though, but its worth it. |
