Pregnant - what exercise can you do? Please help.?



Hi all,

My friend told me not to go to the beach or the pool when im pregnant. Is this correct? If so, why?

What exercise can you do for someone who has never done any? (besides walking and bike riding).

You can definitely go to the beach and pool! Swimming is wonderful all-over exercise for an expectant mother! Maybe your friend was referring to the heat. it is recommended that you don't try to tan while pregnant, since your body heat is already higher than normal, and if you get too warm it could be bad for the baby. But if you're actually in the water and keeping comfortably cool, you'll be fine. As for the exercise, you shouldn't start a new or more strenuous exercise regimen while pregnant. Like you said, walking and biking are good ideas, as well as swimming. There are also certain yoga and pilates classes you can do, as well as workout videos made especially for pregnant women. Anything that puts strain on your abdominal muscles is not a good idea, nor is anything your body is not used to...it's under enough strain already! I know where you're coming from because I'm not in excellent shape, but since getting pregnant, I really want to take good care of my body.
I've never heard about not going to the beach or the pool while pregnant. Why would they make maternity swimsuits then? In fact, a water aerobics class would be great exercise. You should avoid hot tubs though due to the extreme heat. I would take a yoga or pilates class. Just don't overdo it. When I was pregnant with my first, I was in the Navy and wanted an excuse to stop the 5 mile formation runs with my battalion which I absolutely loathed! However, my doctor told me that I was perfectly fit to continue. Unless your doctor advises against it, I would just continue the activity level that you maintained prior to pregnancy. Now wouldn't be the time to start training for that triathlon.
ACTUALLY SWIMMING IS GREAT...JUST DONT GET IN THE HOTTUB OR SAUNA...PILATES IS ALSO GOOD, JUST NOT ANYTHING ON YOUR STOMACH
Yea, swimming is often recommended because it allows you to feel weightless... Also, I found a really good maternity workout video at Walmart that has safe workouts and stretches for all trimesters. Its called fit and firm pregnancy with Dinease Austin.
