Intrapulmonary shunt? I was just told my oxygen drops to 80 quickly with exercise? |
I am only 22. I want to be able to exercise, I need to loose 20 lbs. I am big boned (160) 5 foot 7. I do walk or ride my bike 5 days or more a week but very mildely. anyways. Can any one tell me about a right to left intrapulmonary shut. I have google, but would like to hear personal stories. How do they fix it. I have a appoitment with a specialist at university of chicago. right to left means that a certain percentage of the blood in the right side of the heart is not making it through the lungs to the left side of the heart. that is the most simple non-medical explanation although not entirely physiologically accurate. there are many causes of shunting, a serious kind, but fixable, is a hole in the heart wall. the bigger the hole the more blood can bypass normal circuitry. if you can ride bike, exercise, and do other things like that without getting seriously short of breath, blue nail beds, or blue lips, then i'd say you have a small shunt, but not necessarily a R to L heart wall shunt. intrapulmonary shunt may also be associated with lung vasculature which doesn't allow deoxygenated blood to get oxygenated, so by the time it gets to the left side of the heart the blood is said to be less saturated. there are methods to determine shunt percentages and many shunts are reversible (fixable). depending on the underlying cause some shunts nearly fix themselves. sounds like a specialist is good to consult. probably a pulmonary specialist although a cardiac doc might be called in to. Source(s): medical background, registered respiratory therapist. i have not personal stories but a right to left shunt is when the pressure in the right heart is greater than the left heart. treatment is determined by what causes it. there are several different causes. if it is a septum defect, most likely it will be treated with surgery. if it is pulm. hypertension it can be treated with medicines. i hope this helps, im just giving u the limited info that i know. you should be fine, you caught it in time, its not something you want to go untreated. Right to left INTRAPULMONARY SHUNT??It may be called cardiac shunt ! There are two main reasons one is ASD atrial septal defect and Second is VSD ventricular septal defect! Both are congenital but many time it goes without any detection and in due course of time it gets self closure so doctor may not find it! This is best diagnosed by Color Doppler echocardiography in which you can see blue impure blood is entering red pure blood because of the pressure ingredient difference !In right side of heart there is a so called impure blood and in left side it is pure blood. When you say it is right to left means impure blood is mixing with the pure blood and in that case you should not do any laborious activity as increase in your heart rate and force of contraction will lead to more damage to this defect! Get is repaired surgically and till than do not do vigorous exercises for to prevent further damage !Its not a urgent thing to do but you you should plan for it for better and healthy active life to live further !Always YouRsmE |
