How can I get by with less than 9 hours of sleep?

Hi, I have trouble getting by with less than 9 hours of sleep. My ideal time seems to be going to bed between 11:30 and midnight and getting up at 9am (still, I could probably sleep until 10am if I don't have to get up). Because of this, I have had trouble making it on time at many jobs. If I get less than 9 hours of sleep on more than a few days in a row, my body starts to ache and I get sick (like catch a cold). Even if it's just one day, I cannot fuction well with less than 9 hours (sleepy, tired, brain feeling cloudy). I think I have enough exercise, since I bike to my work and errands every day -- but my sleep pattern was the same even when I had a car. Even if I can go to bed and get up early to go to work on time (which I have tried but falling asleep earlier is difficult), I don't want to spend 9 hours of my day sleeping! I want to be able to make it with 6 to 8 hours, as with many of my productive friends! Any ideas?

Have you had your thyroid checked? I have a thyroid problem, and it causes me to be EXTREMELY tired when I am not on the meds. I know many people who have slept 10 hours, and it came down to a thyroid problem. If your thyroid is acting up, you may be snoring, and when you snore, you actually can have episodes of apnea (I have done this), which will actually cause you to wake up without knowing you have done so SEVERAL times a night.

Dude, go get your thyroid checked...or go see a physician to see if there is some other medical condition that makes you so tired that you have to sleep nine or ten hours...that's just too much.
ive heard that your body best responds to sleep in intervals of 3 hours- 3,6,9- so its actually better to get 9 than 8- nor related to your question, but fun fact.
We all have diferent sleep requirements. You have to accept yours and live with it. Sorry.

u should probably drink red bull, or coffee, which ever u prefer i like red bull it taste like sprite and its gust an energy drink, but i think later on i the day you will get tie-rd if u drink coffee!
set the clock for a earlier time that's all and go to bed later than before
It may be what time you actually go to sleep that is the problem. You may need to go to sleep at 9 or 10pm (earlier bedtime) and sleep for 8 hours or so to actually feel refreshed.
Try going to bed for 9 pm or 10pm for a week and see what time you can get up.
