What are the pros and cons of whey protein shakes?



im more geared toward aerobic exercises (running, rowing, biking, elliptical)...im 5'9 180 pounds

Protein shakes are often used by athletes, and especially body builders. First off, many Americans actually consume far more protein than is needed by their bodies. The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for protein is only 10-15% of your total caloric intake. For instance, an athletic male, aged 25-50, about 5' 10", should 63 gr of protein a day if his total caloric intake is 2900 cal.

Therefore, on the pro side, protein shakes are a quick and convenient way to supplement your diet if you feel you need additional protein and don't want to do so by eating more meat, beans, etc. On the downside, they can be high in sugar, or calories in general. If you count them as a beverage as opposed to a meal supplement, you may find yourself consuming far more calories than you need. Finally, excess protein is hard on the kidneys.
