I have diabetes type 2, doing great so far with diet, no sugar....? |
. I exercise three times a week, use 26" bike, a mile each time. At the same time there is some numbness with bottom of toes, each foot, does not progress, and little dots on top of both feet. Blood sugar stays at 90 to 120 each AM before meal. No meds at this time. Age 65, whats my future look like? Need a new diet, I' tired of same food. Please recommend varied daily diet.......... Recent research has shown a vegan diet to be very helpful in people with diabetes. (I read about it on CNN.com but there is another link I found below.) I'd especially recommend avoiding dairy products. There are many web resources for great vegan recipes. I'd let your doctor know about your feet problems ASAP. Source(s): http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/2... 90 - 120 is great without medication. What makes you think you even have type 2 diabetes? Perhaps you should check your blood sugar at other times of the day, too - make sure it's not 600 when you go to bed! It's hard to tell what your future looks like, but if your blood sugar stays that low it shouldn't affect you badly at all. As far as diets go - it's really good for diabetics to eat a lot of whole grains and beans/lentils. In some countries, most of the peoples diets consist of those two things - so there are many, many recipes out there. You can take regular recipes (eg spaghetti) and change the carbohydrate ingredient to a whole grain (ie whole grain spaghetti) and have a recipe that's great for a diabetic. Use whole-grain rice instead of white rice, only buy whole grain bread etc. etc. You don't have to watch your carbohydrate intake as closely if you're eating whole grains. Also, fresh fruits are good for diabetics even though they have fructose, and you can be creative with fruit. Some neuropathy is inevitable with diabetes. Keep exercising and make sure that you massage your feet regularly. Try cooking your vegetables differently, I have an Italian cookbook called "The Silver Spoon" that has a huge assortment of different recipes for veggies, meats and fish. Chicken stirfry with mixed vegetables and Smucker's sugar free apricot jam mixed with soy sauce, a little vinegar and some garlic/ginger/salt/pepper is delicious. I also watch Rachael Ray's 30 minute meals for inspiration. Try a new recipe every couple of days to mix things up. Keep up the great work with your blood sugar. You probably have a touch of diabetic neuropathy. This likely occurred due to high blood sugar before the diabetes. Sounds like you are doing great with it though. The neuropathy you have may not go away, however, the best thing you can do to keep it from getting worse is to control your blood sugar. If the neuropathy gets painful there are medications out there. There are also some treatments out there like anodyne therapy. |
